Since it was Ham mond's turn to select the chall enge location, the team went to the Western United States. Jer emy selected the Lexus LFA, James chose the new Aston Marti n Van quish, and Richard took the S RT Viper. After a br ief drive in the Nevada desert, the trio headed to Las Vegas Mo tor Speedway, specifi cally the drag strip, to compete i n drag races organized by the Las Vegas Police Department; who m organized it with the theory that all owing pe ople to drag ra ce, legally, at a closed circuit, w ould prevent s treet racing. Despi te the high performance of their cars, the tr io were be aten by modifie d production cars, and 4WD cars, in ea ch of their drag races. The team then stayed for a night in Palm Sprin gs. However, the producers gave t hem a final chal lenge. The three would drive from Palm Springs to the Mexican border at C alexico the f ollowing morning , and the last to make it to the Mexican border would hav e to travel into the country i tself to drive the Mastretta MXT, a Mexican sports car made fun of by the prese nters in an earlier series, for a later se gment on the show. Challeng e, Part 1: The producers have re served a single ticket to a football match at the San Siro in M ilan, North ern Italy. The trio have a race from Wembley Sta dium to t he San Siro. Jer emy drives th e Shelby Mustang GT500 an d Richard an d Ja mes t ravel on public transport. Simila r to the previo us race to Mont e Carlo, Richar d and James are not allowed to use any car s, and J eremy is n ot allowed to use any trains. Acco rding to Jeremy, since the l ast epi c race, the trains have become fast er and b oats have become slower. Richard and James op ened up a big lead whilst trav elling on the Eurostar, and arri ve i n Paris while Jerem y was still crossing the Eng lish Channel on a ferry. After reachin g France, Jeremy discovers that the Mustang onl y holds 50 litres in its fuel tank. After leavi ng Pari s, Richard and James discuss w hat to do upon arriv ing in Milan — as t here are two of them but only one tick et. Je remy began to cat ch up and wa s nearly neck and neck with t he train , until road works at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slow hi m down. The train starts to accelerate again and reaches Northern Italy a head of Jere my. Richard and J ames use a tube network to get to the streets nea r th e finish line. Jam es ma inta ins his oppos ition to run on t elevision and Richard runs o ff alone to find the finish line, whi ch is at a bar i n the IM Villa Ve uve Cliequot. James then assem bled a bike which he had hidd en in on e of his bags and rides to the bar, on ly to find that Richard is already the re and has won the rac e and th e ticket t o the football match. Jeremy demonstrates the complexit y of m odern cars' dshboard. Richard brings a Fiat Mult ipla and both modify it. Jeremy breaks the dashboard and replaces it c onsidering it to be too complicated f or elders. R ichard asks for t he airba gs saying that it is dangerous for the eld erly w ho are as de licate as children , and th at he needs it for a safety featur e. Jeremy makes a speedometer whi ch reads 20 mph at the to p speed , he als o uses a n old design switch for rear fog l ight whic h does nothing. Jeremy installs a pet-cage and replaces the back seat wit h high seat chai rs and the Fiat badge w ith a Rover on e. T hey paint it in beige a fter observing the shade of a hearing aid. Richard uses water-resistant fabric as seat co vers, and whi le stitching hur ts his e ye. They com plete the car and end the part 1 with Richard wear ing heavy band ages over his left eye. The new ca r is co mpletel y redesig ned, 400 kg lighte r due to Alu minium body, has acti ve suspension, new gearbox, minimalist d ashbo ard and offers b etter comfort. James th en races it against TerraM ax at Nevada Auto motive Test Centre, Nev ada. The race wa s to a hill 10 mile across , pas sing through rocky terra in, hillock, m ud, river and s and-trac ks. TerraMa x was switched to drone mode dur ing the race to deflate the tyr es and take a short-cut. The Range Rover's automatic Ter rain Response System i s demonstrated. The car has la rge front bumper s made up of foam, large rear-view mirrors , squ eaking ball under the brake-pedal, large magnifying -glass on the dashboard, sat nav (voiced by R ichard Brie rs) wi th only four d estinatons. The car h as an art ificial c at on t he roof which l ater fell over on the w ay of Bingo hall. Richard later shows his system t o find th e location of parked car (t he car ac tivates a flare and then releases a balloon) . Jeremy shows that the radio only plays Horse of the Yea r Show theme on a loop, which bo th later fin d to be irresistible to clap along. T he name of the car is revealed to be Th e James. They pick up thre e elderl y lad ies from a pensioners ' home for road-testing and d rive the m to a bow ling c lub where it is shown that R ichard fit ted the a irba g at the rear for parking assist which inflates the air bag on close proximity. Jeremy a nd Rich ard buy food for picnic, choosing only British foods . They atta ch the shopping trolley to Tow hitch and head f or pi cnic. The ro of of the car leaks as it rains. Jeremy and Ric hard end up choosing a picni c spot on roadside where the y find the trolley to be damaged during reversing and th e food to be soaked, however they ate the food which was n ot rui ned. The next day both leave Christchurch and Jeremy shows hi s sys tem to prevent the car from being driven on the wrong side of the road , the car init ially sounds alarm and later the ty res, doors and other p arts of the car e xplod e wh ich stops the c ar and renders it immobile. The episode was shot in 2012. Challenge , Part 1: Buy used estate cars for up to £1,500 in Bri tain and report at a small villag e in rural Uganda. Jeremy a rrives in a BMW 528i Touring, Richar d in a Subar u Im preza WRX Estate and Ja mes in a Volvo 850R Wagon. The challenge i s to find the true s ource of the riv er Nile. They set off an discover that explor ing isn 9;t as difficult a s first thought when they go on a nic e easy drive and find Lake Victoria, of w hom the Victorian Explorers though t was the source of the N ile. H owever they are then told that it is no t the actual source of the Nile and there w ere two other disputed locations for it, one in Rwanda and one in Burundi. How ever, Jer emy Clark son insiste d that both of the se loc ations were wrong and decided to hea d west towards Lake Edward to see whether there was a link between that lake and Lak e Kivu in Rw anda. In their journey w est, w here they visit the Entebbe Airport and from the re see the Ford Scorpio Esta te back -up c ar. They co ntinue into Kampala, Uganda& #39;s Capital City where they get he ld up in a t raffic jam overnight, the most hurrendous traffic they'd ever see n. They continue on wel l-maintained hig hways w est f indi ng t heir trip incredib ly easy before rea ching the town of Mbara ra in the southwest of the country, via a stop in Jezza, a village in Mpi gi District. Here the y stay in a disgusti ng hotel, after dri ving thr ough tea plantat ions in an attem pt to disc over a lov ely tea house hotel, which in the mi nd of R ichard, was bou nd to found due t o tea programmes h e' d seen. In Mbara ra they stay ed in the Economic Lodge with Jeremy having a bed with fa eces on it. They left the hotel disgusted bef ore Richard ha s the idea to make the cars 'hot els'. James modifies his Vol vo by adding a library, Richard adds a cooke r and Jeremy adds a coffin. The coffin he uses to p ut his clo thes in, he sleeps on Egyptian Cotton. They leave for Lake Edward, camping over night there becau se of its beauty befo re he adin g in search o f the river headi ng for Lake Kivu. None of the rivers connect the lake as they all head east rather than south. They give up, l eaving them disappoi nted. The n Jeremy lo oks at a map and discovers the source of the Nil e must be on the othe r side of Lake Victoria. Hi s reasoning is that the Mediterra nean Se a is effectiv ely an inla nd sea and so Gibraltar is the true mouth of the Nile, rather than Alexandria in Egypt. After discov ering this they decide that they must drive straight to the other side of Lake Victoria to get to the southeast co ast in Tanzania near the Serengeti.
