News: T he Dacia Sandero i s now o n sale in the UK. The Merced es-Benz SLS AM G Black has been update d to produce extra horsepower , but the handl ing is still ch allenging. Jer emy cl aims that he has found a male e quival ent versio n of Fifty Shades of Grey, presen ting a kid 9;s book about t ractor s. The new Chevrolet Stingray is announced. James Ma y tur ned fifty the previous we ek. Also, the ra lly team c omposed of war amp utees (pre viously mentioned in se ries 17, episode 6) finally complete d the ir challenge of finishing the 2013 Dakar Rally. Review: James revie ws the new Bentley Contine ntal GT, and notes the new engine and subt le ride characteristics. Be lievi ng that the Bentley, w ith four w heel drive system and a big, powerful en gine, can h andle things wor se than a Welsh countryside road, Ja mes takes the car onto a Welsh stage of t he World Ra lly Championship, with Kri s Meeke b ehind the wheel, and James being the co-driver. Despite t he car having le ss grip, more weight, an electronic handbr ake (unsuit able for usage on a r ally stage) and James not being proficient at giv ing pace notes , the Bentley w as actually faster than one of the full WRC cars. Star In A Reasonably Priced Car: Damian Le wis ta kes his turn in the car, and dr ifts the Kia Cee& #39;d around the s now-coated test track and crosses the f inish line s ideway s, se tting t he s lowest ever time of 2:09.1. Jeremy che ers Damian up by mak ing a separate board for sno w (he justs put the time u nderneath and to the si de of the fastest lap tim e on t hat board) and says that he is the fastes t driver ever on thei r "snow board". Challenge: Jeremy attempt s to buil d a car smaller tha n the Pe el P50, naming his creation the P45. It was based on a quad bike, with bodywork fitted, designed to wrap arou nd the driver. He th en pres ented his idea to the & #39;Dr agons' in a Dragons' De n style format. All of the dr agon s declare th emselves "out" and back in the studio, Richa rd con cludes that for the P45 to be put in production, Jeremy wou ld have to be dead. 149 Series 19, Episode 2 3 February 2013 Mick Fleetwo od Challenge, Part 1: In anothe r cha llenge, the presenters pic ked three s uper cars to take on an epic race. Sin ce it was Hammond';s turn to select the challeng e locati on, the team went to th e Wes tern Un ited States. Jeremy se lected the Lexus LFA, James chose the new Aston M artin V anquish, and Richard took the SRT Viper. Aft er a brie f drive i n the Nevada desert, t he trio hea ded to Las Vegas Motor Spee dway, s pecifically th e drag str ip, to co mpete in drag races organized by the Las Vegas Poli ce Departmen t; whom org anized it w ith the t heory that a llowing people to drag race, legall y, at a closed ci rcuit, wou ld prevent street racing. De spite the high performance of their cars, the trio were b eate n by modifi ed production cars, a nd 4WD cars, in each of their drag races. News: Jeremy comes up with a solution on how to solve the crisis affec ting Bri tain's town centres: sacking all traff ic wardens a nd remov ing double yellow line s. The trio then review a Chinese p roduct designed to stop drowsiness behi nd the wheel, before they took a first look at the 2013 Jaguar F-Type. They praised its styling, but criticized it s high pric e tag of £60,000, as well as its target audi ence. J ames mention s Peugeot Ci troen39;s ca r intended to run on compress ed air; J eremy attempted to use a fir e exti nguishe r to demonstr ate, but failed a fter only causing hi mself to tur n slowly around. Challen ge, Part 2.: After leaving Las Vegas, James and Richard make fun of Je remy 's LFA for lacki ng not only Blueto oth connection and iPod conne ctors, but cup holders, desp ite being the most expensive car . They are then tasked to head to Willow Spr ings Inte rnation al Mo torsp orts Park, but they instead stop on a grooved road, where each car driv es over the groove s and prod uces notes. When they reach Willo w Springs, they are forced to p lay an aerial vers ion of Lase r Quest, where th ey would drive 5 l aps around the track, whilst being chased by t wo Aer macchi SF.260 armed with la ser guns. In the end, Jam es won t he chal lenge by being hit only 17 t imes. Star in a Rea sonably Priced Car: Fleet wood Ma c's Mick Fleetwood drove the Kia Cee9;d around the Test Track w ith a lap of 1:45.4. Challenge , Part 3: Departing Willow Springs, the gr oup headed for Los Angeles, California. In or der to do "r eal world&qu ot; testing, Ri chard devised a challenge to see who could burn the best elevens. The three instea d end ed up draw ing a pha llus an d left LA. The team then stayed for a night in Pa lm Sp rings. However, t he producers gave them a final chal lenge. Th e three would drive from P alm Spring s to the Mexican bo rder at Calexic o the following morning, and the las t to make i t to the Mexican border would have to travel i nto the country itself t o drive t he Mastretta MXT, a Mexican sports car made fun of by the pres enters in an earlier series, for a lat er segment on the show. In revenge for taking them to Ameri ca, J eremy and Jame s sab otaged Hammond's Viper, ca using him to lose 1 0 minutes in th e race. Despite making a st op f or fuel, Jeremy made it to the finish lin e first , with James in second. Ri chard then w alked to the bord er being t he last pe rson t o arrive. At the studio, Jam es and Jerem y en d by saying th at the Viper was awful and that the Vanquish and LFA were amazing.< br/> 150 Series 19, Epi sode 3 1 0 Febr uary 2013 Amy Macdo nald Review: Jeremy reviews the Toyota GT86 and the Subaru BRZ. The cars are almost i dentical, but Jeremy prefers the Toyota GT86. The Stig then c ompleted a lap of the Test Track in 1:31:3. N ews: They discuss the new Subaru Impreza, which is not comin g to U K, and they then talk about th e new Mas erati Quattroporte. Challenge, Part 1: The pro ducers have reserved a singl e tic ket to a footbal l match at t he San Siro in Milan, Northern Italy. The trio have a race from Wembley Stadium t o the San Siro. Jerem y drives the Shelby Mustang GT500 and Rich ard and James travel on p ublic transpo rt. Similar to the pr evious r ace to Mo nte Carlo, Richard and James are not al lowed to use any ca rs, and J erem y is not allowed to use any t rains. According to Jere my, since the last epic r ace, the trains have become f aster and boats have beco me slower. Ri chard and James opened up a big l ead whilst travellin g on the Eur ostar, and a rrive in Par is while Jeremy was still crossing the English Channel on a ferry. After reac hing Fra nce, Jeremy discove rs tha t the Must ang onl y holds 50 litres in its fuel tank. After leaving Paris, Richard and James dis cuss what to do upon arriving in Mil an — as there are two o f the m but only one ticket . Hundre ds o f miles behind, Jeremy end s part 1 of the challenge stating out loud, "I'm gonna lose!" Star in a Reason ably Priced C ar: Amy Macdonald drove the Kia Cee 39;d around the Test Track in 1:44.4. During one of her prac tice runs, Amy accidentally destroyed one of t he ru nway lights, which Jeremy gives to her after revealing the lap time. Challenge, Pa rt 2: The hi gh speed TGV slowed down as it approached the mou ntains that surround Northe rn Italy. Je remy b egan to ca tch up and was nearly neck a nd neck with the train, until road wo rks at t he Mont Blanc Tunnel slow him down. The trai n starts to accelerate again and re aches Northe rn Italy ah ead of Jerem y. Richa rd and James use a tube network to get to the streets near the fin ish line. James mai ntains his o pposition to run on television and Richard runs off alone t o find th e finish line, which is at a bar in the IM Villa Veuv e Cli equot. James then a ssembled a bike which he had hidden in one of h is bags and rid es to the bar, on ly to find that Richard is already ther e and has won the race and the ticket to the footb all match. Moments later, Jeremy arrived a nd accepted de feat for t he first time ever in an ep ic race o f all t he series. 151 Series 19, Episode 4 17 Februar y 2013 Lewis Hamilton Rev iew: Jeremy reviews the Vauxhall As tra VXR, Ford Focus ST and Renau lt Megan e Renault Sport Cup. The Stig did laps of each ca r, the Focus being the slowest at 1:29. 6, the Astra VXR at 1 :28.3, and the Megane in 1:27.7. Despite this, Jeremy chose the Astra VXR as the best ove rall car of the three . News: They discuss the new est cars, such as the Al fa R omeo 4C, the next ge neration Ford Mustang would be sold in G reat Britain, but the UK versi on wou ld come with a 2.0 EcoBoost eng ine, and the impor tance of the handbrake t urn in " ;male development". R evie w: Jeremy tests the all new Kia Cee'd, putting it thr ough a m yriad of strange ro ad tes ts. Including M att LeBla nc doing a lap with both the old and n ew Cee& #39;d, Bruce Willis (in charact er as John McClan e) testing the horn of t he Ce e'd, Eric Clapton tes ting its a uxiliary input jack, and Jeremy testing the Cee'd 39;s self parallel parking feature. Star in a R easonably Pr iced Car: Lewis Hamilton opens up about his move from McLaren to Mercedes A MG and t akes the old Suzuki Liana around t he Test Track, sett ing the fas test F1 t ime, a 1:42.9. Rev iew: As puni shme nt for l osin g the previous race, Richard is forced to review the Mast retta MXT i n Mex ico. Minding his words, he sta tes that the M XT was an ambitious undertaking for the first-time manuf actur er, but that it had its share of flaw s. Challenge: Jeremy and James play car rugby using Ki a Cee'ds and Kia S portages at Twickenham Stadium and Stig in Vaux hall Ast ra Po lice ca r as the referee. Jeremy's team wins. 152 Serie s 19, Episode 5 24 Febru ary 2013 James McAvoy Challe nge, Part 1: Jeremy and R ichard attempt to design a c ar targete d at elderly people. Je remy demonstrates the complexity of modern cars39; dshboard. Richard bring s a Fiat Multipla and both mod ify it. Jeremy brea ks the dashboard and rep laces it consideri ng it to be too complicate d fo r elders. Ri chard asks for the airb ags saying that it is dangerous for the eld erly who are as delicate as children, and that he needs it for a safety feature. J eremy makes a speedomete r which reads 20 mph a t the top speed , he also u ses an o ld design switch for rear fog l ight which does nothi ng. Jerem y inst alls a pet-cage and replaces the b ack seat wit h hig h seat chairs and t he Fiat badg e with a Rover one. They pai nt it in beige a fter observing the shade of a hearing aid . Richa rd uses w ater-resistant fabric as seat c overs, and while stitching hur ts his eye. They co mplete the car and end the part 1 wit h Rich ard wearing heavy band ages over h is le ft eye.< br/> Ne ws: Volksw agen will launch GTI version of the new Golf and GT version of Up will be launched. Kia will launch the Pro Cee'd GT. The Mini P acema n is launched, an d the trio mock the front end of the car, claiming that it looks de pressin g. The trio agree that the Bri tish are the best dri vers. Alfa-Romeo releases photogr aphs of the Glor ia, in which the trio make f un of i t' s name. Richard had arrived late so James and Jeremy had attempt ed to play tennis with cars (which has a lot of edi ting) . Re view: James reviews the new Range Rover in London. The n ew car is com pletely redesi gned, 400 kg lighter due to Aluminium body, has acti ve suspension, new gearbox, min imalist d ashboard and offers better comfort. J ames then races it against T erraMax at Nevada A utomotive Test Centre, Nevada. The race was to a hill 10 mile across, p assing through r ocky terrain, hillock, mu d, river and sand-tracks. Ter raMax was switched to d rone mode during the race to def late the tyres and take a short-cut. The Range Rover's autom atic Terrain Response Sys tem is demonstr ated. James takes a longer ro ute to ascend the hill but still wins the race. At the studio, the trio consider the driverless cars to be not very prac tical. Star In A Reasonably Priced Car: Ja mes McAvoy drove the Kia Cee' ;d around the Test Track w ith a lap of 1:43.6 despite having less experi ence of dr iving cars. He dro ve over grassy patch in the last corner but manages to keep the ca r un der control. Ch allenge, Pa rt 2: Jeremy an d Richard road-test t heir car at Christchurch, Dorset. The car has large front bumpers mad e up of foam, la rge rear-vi ew mirrors, sque aking ball under the brak e-pedal, large magnifying-glass on t he dashbo ard, sat n av (voi ced by Richa rd Briers) w ith only four destinatons. The car has an art ificial cat on the roof wh ich lat er fell over on t he way of Bingo hall. Richard later shows h is s ystem to find the location of parked car (the car act ivates a flare and the n releases a balloon). Jeremy shows that the ra dio only pl ays Horse of the Year S how theme on a loop , which both lat er find to be irre sistib le to clap along. The name of the car i s revealed to be The Jam es. Th ey pick u p three elderly ladies fro m a pension ers' ; home for road -testing and drive them to a bowling cl ub where it is shown th at Richard fitted the airbag at t he rear for parking assi st which inflates the airbag on cl ose proximi ty. Jerem y and Richard buy food for picni c, choosing on ly British foods. They attach the shopping trolley to Tow hitch a nd head for picnic. The ro of of the c ar leaks as it rains. Jeremy and Richard end up choosing a picnic spot on roadsi de whe re they find the trolley to be da maged during reversing a nd the food to b e soake d, how ever they ate the food whic h was n ot ru ined. The ne xt day both leave Christchur ch and Jeremy sh ows his sys tem t o prevent the car from b eing driven on th e wrong side of the road, the c ar in itially sounds alarm and l ater the tyres, do ors and other par ts of the car explode which sto ps the car and render s it immobile. At the s tudio, James consi ders th e heater to be com plicated, th e trio thank Richard Briers and announce the Africa special. 153 Series 19, Ep isode 6 3 March 2013 No Guest First of the two-ep isode Africa Special, taking pl ace in Africa. The episode was shot in 2012. Challenge, Part 1: Buy used esta te cars for up to £ 1,500 in Britain a nd report at a small vil lage in r ural Uganda. Jeremy arrive s in a BMW 5 28i Touring, Ric hard in a Subar u Impreza WRX Estate and James in a Volv o 850R Wa gon. The challenge is to find the true source of the river Nil e. They set of f an disc over that exploring isn' t as difficult as first thought when they go on a nice e asy drive and find Lak e Vi ctoria, o f whom the Vic torian Explo rers t hought wa s the source of the Nile. However they are then to ld that it is not the actual sourc e of the Nil e and there were two other d isputed lo cations for it, one in Rwanda and one in Burundi. However, Jeremy Cla rkson insiste d that both of these lo cations were wrong and decided to head west towards Lake Edward to see whether there was a link between that la ke a nd L ake K ivu i n Rwanda. In their journ ey west, where they vis it th e Entebbe Airpor t and fr om there see the Ford Scorpio Est ate back-up car. They continue into Kampala, Ugand a 9;s Capital City where they get held up in a tra ffic jam overnight, t he mos t hurren dous traffic they9;d ev er seen. The y con tinue on well-maintained hig hways west finding the ir trip inc redib ly easy before rea ching the t own of Mbarara in the sou thwest of the country, via a stop in J ezza, a village in Mpigi District. Here th ey stay in a disgusting hotel, after d riving throu gh tea p lantat ions in an attempt to dis cover a lovely teahouse hotel, which in the min d of Richard, was boun d to fou nd du e to tea programmes he'd seen. In Mba rara the y stay ed in the Ec onomic L odge with Jeremy having a bed w ith faeces o n it. They left the hotel dis gusted before Richard ha s the idea to make the cars 'hotels'. James modi fies his Volvo by adding a libra ry, Richard adds a cooker a nd Jere my adds a coffin. Th e coffi n he use s to put h is clothes in, he sleeps on Egyptian Cotton.< br/> They leave for Lake Edwa rd, camping overnight there because of its beauty before heading in search of the river head ing for Lake Kivu. N one of the rivers co nnect the l ake as they all head east rather than south. Th ey give up, leaving them disappointed. Then Jeremy look s at a map and d iscovers the sourc e of the Nile must be on the other side of Lake Victoria. His reasoning is that the Mediterran ean Sea is effectiv ely an inland sea and so Gibraltar i s the true mouth of the N ile, rather than Alexandria in Egypt. After discove ring thi s they decid e that they mus t drive straight to the other side of Lake Victor ia to get to the southeast coast in Tanzania near the Serengeti.
