Jerem y claim s that he has found a male equival ent version of Fifty Shades of Grey, presenting a kid ';s book about t ractors. The new Chevrolet Stingray is annou nced. James May turned fifty the previous week. Also, the rally team com posed of war amputees (previou sly mentio ned in series 17, episode 6) finally comp leted their challenge of finishing the 2013 Dakar Rally. Revie w: James reviews t he n ew Bentley Continental GT, and n otes the new eng ine and subtle ride charac teristics. B elie ving that the Bent ley, with four wh eel d rive system and a big, powerful engine, can handle things worse than a Welsh coun tryside ro ad, James t akes th e car onto a Welsh stage of the Wo rld Rally Championship , with Kris Meeke b ehind the wh eel, and Jame s being the co-d river. Despite th e car havi ng l ess grip , more weight, an electronic handbra ke (unsuit able f or usa ge on a rally stage) and James not being profic ient at giving p ace notes, the Bentley was actua lly faster than one of the full WRC cars. Star In A Re asonably Pr iced Car: Damian Lewis takes his turn in the car, and dr ifts t he K ia Cee'd around the snow- coat ed test tra ck and cross es the finish line sideways, setting the slowest ever ti me of 2 :09.1. Je remy cheers Damian up by making a separate board fo r snow (he ju sts put the time un dern eath and to the side of the fastest lap time on that board) and says that he is the fastest driver ever on their "snow b oard&quo t;. Challenge: Jeremy attempt s to build a car smaller than the Peel P50, na ming his creation the P45. It was based o n a quad bike, with bodywork fitted, design ed to wrap around the driver. H e then pre sented his idea to the 'Drag ons 9; in a Dragons' Den style format. All o f the drag ons declare themselves "out" and back i n the studio, Rich ard concludes that for the P45 to be put in prod uction, Jeremy would have to be dead. 149 Series 19 , Episode 2 3 February 2013 Mick Fleetwood Cha llenge, Part 1: In another challenge, the presenters p icked thre e super cars to take on a n epic race. Since it was Hammond 's tur n to select the ch allenge lo cation, the team w ent to the W estern United Stat es. Je remy selected the Lexus LFA, James chose th e new Aston Martin Van quish, and Richard to ok the S RT Vipe r. Aft er a brief drive in the Nevada desert, the trio head ed to Las V egas Motor Speedway, specifically the drag strip, to com pete i n drag race s organized by the Las Veg as Police Department; w hom organized it with the theory that allowing people to drag race, lega lly, at a cl osed circuit, wou ld pr event street racing. Desp ite the hi gh performance of their cars, the trio were beate n by modified production car s, and 4 WD cars, in each of th eir drag races. News: Jeremy comes up with a solutio n on how to s olve the crisis affectin g Bri tain 39;s town centres: sacking a ll traffic wardens and removi ng double yellow lines . Th e trio then revie w a Chinese product designed to stop dr owsiness be hind the wheel, before they took a first look at the 201 3 Jaguar F -Type. They praised its styling, but criticized its high pri ce tag of £60,000, as well as its target audience. James mentions Peugeot Citr oen9;s car intend ed to run o n compressed air; Jeremy att empte d to use a fire extinguisher t o demonstrate, but failed after only causing himsel f to turn slowly ar ound. Cha llenge, Part 2.: After leaving Las Vegas, James and Richard make fun of J eremy39;s LFA for lacking not only Bluet ooth connection and iPod connect ors, but cup holders, despi te being the most expe nsive car . They are then task ed to h ead to Willo w Springs International Motorspor ts P ark, but they instead s top on a grooved ro ad, where each car drives over the grooves and produce s notes. When they reach Willow Spri ngs, they are forced to p lay an aerial v ersion of Laser Quest, where the y would drive 5 laps around the tra ck, whilst being chased by two Aermacchi SF.260 armed with las er guns. In the end, James won the c hallenge b y being hi t only 17 times. Star in a Rea sonably Pric ed Car: F leetwood Mac 's Mick Fle etwoo d drove t he Kia Cee 39;d ar ound the Test Track with a lap of 1:45.4. Challenge, Part 3: Departing Wi llow Springs, the group headed for Los Angeles, California. In order to do "rea l world" test ing, Richa rd devis ed a chall enge to see who c ould burn the be st elevens. The three instead ended up drawing a phallus and left LA. The team then stayed for a ni ght in Palm Sp rings. However, the producers gave them a final challenge. The three would drive from Palm Sp rings to the Mexican bo rder at Calexico th e following morning, and the last to make it to the Mexican border would have to travel into the country itself to dr ive the Mastretta MXT, a Mexican sp orts car made f un of by the pr esenters in an earlier s eries, for a later segmen t on the show. In revenge fo r taking them to Ame rica, Jeremy and Jame s sabotaged Hammond';s Viper, causing him to lose 10 minutes in the race. Despite making a stop f or fuel, Jeremy m ade it to the finish line first, with Ja mes i n second. Richar d then walked to the border being the last person to arrive. At the st udio, James and Jeremy end by sa ying that the Viper was a wful and that the Vanquish and LFA we re amazing. 150 Ser ies 19, Epi sode 3 10 February 2013 Amy Macdonald Review: Jeremy revi ews the Toyota GT86 and the Su baru BRZ. The cars are almost identical, but Jerem y prefers the T oyota GT86. The Stig t hen completed a lap of the Test Track in 1:31:3. News: They discuss the new Subaru Im preza, which is not coming to UK, and they th en talk abou t the new Maserati Quattropo rte. Challe nge, P art 1: The producers have reserved a single tic ket to a football matc h at the San Siro in Mila n, Northern Italy. T he trio have a race fro m Wembley S tadium to the S an Siro. Jeremy drives the S helby Mustang GT500 an d Richard and James tr avel on pu blic transp ort. Similar to the pr evious race to Monte Carlo , Rich ard and James are not allowed to use any cars, and Jeremy is not allowed to use any trains. According to Jeremy, since the last epic ra ce, the trains have beco me f aster and boats have become slow er. Richard and James opene d up a big le ad whilst t ravellin g on the Eurostar, and arrive in Paris whil e Jeremy was still crossing the English Channel on a ferry. After reaching France, Jeremy dis covers that the Mustang only holds 50 l itres in its fuel tank. After l eaving Paris, Ri chard and James discuss what to do upon arrivi ng in Milan — as th ere a re two of th em but only one t icket. H undred s of mi les behi nd, Jeremy ends part 1 of the challenge stat ing out loud, " I'm gonna lose!&quo t; Star in a Reasonably Pr iced Car: Amy Macdonald drov e the Kia Cee& #39;d ar ound the Test Track in 1: 44.4. D uring one of her practice runs, Amy accidentally destroye d one of the run way lights, wh ich Jeremy gives to her after re vealing the lap time. Challenge, P art 2: The high s peed TGV s lowed down as it ap proa ched the mo untains that surround Northern Italy. Jeremy be gan to catch up and was nearly neck and neck with the tr ain, until road work s at the M ont Bl anc Tunnel slow h im down. The train starts to accelerate again and reaches Northern Italy ahead of Jeremy. Richard and James use a tu be network to get to the stre ets near th e fi nish line. James maintains h is oppo sitio n to run on television and Richard runs off alone to find the finish line, which is at a bar in the IM Villa Veuve Cl iequot . James then as sembled a bike which he had hidden in one of h is bag s and rides to the bar, only t o find that Richar d is already there and has won the race and the t icket to the footb all match. Mom ents later, Jeremy arrived and acc epted defeat for the first ti me ever in an e pic rac e of all the series. 151 Series 19, Episode 4 17 Febru ary 2013 Lewis Hamilt on Review: Jeremy r eviews the Vauxhall Ast ra VXR, Ford Focus ST and Renault Me gane Renault Sport Cup. The Stig did laps of each car, th e Focus being the s lowest at 1:2 9.6, the Astra VXR at 1:28 .3, and the Megane in 1:27.7. Despite t his, Jeremy chose the Astra VXR as the best ov erall car of the three. News: They discuss the newe st cars, such a s the Alfa Romeo 4C, the next generation Ford Mustang would be sold in Great Brit ain, but the UK version would co me with a 2.0 EcoBoost engin e, and the import ance of the handbrake tur n in " male devel opment". Review: Jere my tests the all new Kia Cee';d, putting it throug h a myriad of s trange road tests. Including Matt LeBlanc doin g a la p with bo th the old and new Cee ';d, Bruce Willis ( in character as John McClane) tes ting the hor n of t he Cee'd, Eric Clap ton testing its auxiliar y input j ack, and Jeremy t esting the Cee'd 39;s self parallel parking featu re. Review: As pun ishm ent for losin g the previous race, Richard i s forced to revie w the Mastretta MXT in Mexic o. Minding hi s words, he stat es that the MXT was an ambi tiou s undertaking for the first-time m anufacturer, but that i t ha d its share of flaws. Challenge: Jeremy and James play ca r rugby using Kia Cee'd s and Kia Sporta ges at Twickenh am Sta dium and Stig in Vauxhal l Astra Police car a s the referee. Jeremy de monstrates the complexity of mo dern ca rs9; dshb oard . Rich ard brings a Fiat Multi pla an d both modify it. J eremy bre aks the dashboard and replaces it cons idering it to be too complicated for e lders. Ri chard ask s for the ai rbags saying t hat it is da ngerous f or the elderly who are as d elicate as chi ldren, a nd that he needs it f or a safety feature. Jeremy makes a speedometer which re ads 20 mph at the top speed, he also uses an ol d desig n sw itch fo r rear fog light whic h does nothi ng. Jeremy i nstalls a pet-cage and repla ces th e back seat with high seat chairs and the Fiat bad ge with a Rover one. They paint it in beige after observing the sha de of a hearing aid. Richard uses wa ter- resistan t fa bric as seat covers, a nd while sti tching hurts his eye. They complete the car and end the part 1 with Richard wearing heavy bandages over his left eye. News: Volkswagen will launch GTI version of th e new Golf and GT vers ion of Up will be launched. Kia will launch the Pro Cee39;d GT. The Mini Pacem an i s launch ed, and the trio mock the front end of the car, claimi ng that it looks depre ssing. The t rio agree that the British ar e the best drivers. Alfa-Romeo releases photographs of the Gloria, in wh ich the trio make fun of it's name. Richard had a rrived late so James and Jeremy had att empt ed to play tennis with cars (which has a lot of editing). Review : James reviews the new Range Rover in London. The new car is completely redesi gned, 400 kg lighter due to Aluminium body, has active su spension, n ew gearbox, minimalis t dashboard and offers better co mfort. James the n races i t agains t TerraM ax at Nevada Automotive Test Ce ntre, Nev ada. The ra ce was to a hill 10 mile across, passing through ro cky terrain, hillock , mud, river and s and-tracks. TerraMax was switched to dron e mode duri ng the race to d efla te the tyres and t ake a short -cut. The R ange Rover 's au tomatic Terrain Resp onse S ystem is demonstr ated. James takes a longer route to ascend the hill but stil l wins the race. At th e studio, th e trio conside r the driverless cars t o be not very practical. He drove over gras sy pa tch in th e last corner but manages to keep the car under control. Challenge, Part 2: Jeremy and R ichar d road-test their car at Chri stchurc h, Dorset. Th e ca r has large front bumpers made up of foam, large rear-view mirr ors, sque aking ball under the brake -pedal, large magnifying-glass on the dashboard , sa t nav (v oiced by Richard Briers) with only four dest inatons. The car has a n artif icial cat on the roof whic h later fe ll over on the way of Bingo hall. Richa rd later shows his system to fin d the location of pa rked car (the car activates a fl are and then relea ses a balloon). Jeremy shows that the ra dio only pla ys Horse of the Year Show them e on a lo op, which both later f ind t o be irresistible to clap along. The name of the car is revealed to be The James. They pick up three el derly ladie s from a pensioners ' home for road-testing an d drive them to a b owling c lub whe re it is sh own that R ichard fi tted the ai rbag at the rear for parking assist which inflates the airbag o n close proximity. Jere my and Richard buy food for picn ic, ch oosing onl y British foods. They atta ch the sho pping troll ey to Tow h itch and he ad for picnic. The roof o f the car l eaks as it rains. Jeremy and Ri chard end up choosing a picnic s pot on roadside where they find the trolley to be damage d during rev ersing and the food to be soaked, however they ate the foo d whi ch was not ruined. The next day both l eave Christchurch and Jeremy shows his system to preve nt th e car from b eing driven on the wrong side o f the road, the car initially sounds alarm and lat er the tyres, doors and other parts of the car e xplode whic h stops the car and renders it im mobile. At the stud io, James considers the heater to be c omplicat ed, the trio thank Richard Bri ers and announce the Africa sp ecial. 153 Series 19, E pisode 6 3 Mar ch 2013 No Guest First of th e two-episode Africa Sp ecial, taking place in Africa. The epi sode was s hot in 2012. Challenge, Part 1: Buy used e state cars for up to £1,500 in Britain and repo rt at a small village in rural Uganda. Jeremy arrive s in a BMW 528i Tourin g, Richar d in a Sub aru Impreza W RX Estate a nd James in a Vo lvo 85 0R Wagon. The challenge is to find the true source of the river N ile. T hey set off an discover that exploring isn& #39;t a s difficult as first thought when the y go on a nice easy drive and find Lake Vict oria, of whom the Victorian Explorers thought w as the sour ce of the Nile. However they are then told that it is not t he actu al source of the Nile and the re were two other d isputed locations for it, one i n Rwanda and one in Burundi. However , Jerem y Clarkson insisted that both of thes e lo cations were wrong and dec ided to h ead west towards Lake Edwar d to see whethe r there was a link bet ween tha t la ke and Lake Kivu in R wand a. In thei r jo urney west, wh ere they visi t the Entebbe Airport and from t here see the Fo rd Scorp io Estate back-up ca r. They continue into Kampala, Ugand a's Capital City wher e they ge t held up in a traffic jam overnight, the most hur rendou s traf fic they9;d ever se en. They continue on well-maintained hig hways west finding their trip incredibly easy before reaching the tow n of Mbarara i n the southwest of the country, via a s top in Jezza, a vill age in Mpig i District. Here they stay i n a disgustin g hotel, after driving through tea plantations in an attempt to discover a lov ely tea house hotel, which in the mind of Richard, was b ound t o found due to tea progr ammes he 39;d seen. In Mbarar a they staye d in the Economic Lod ge with J eremy having a bed with f aeces on it. T hey l eft th e hotel d isgusted before Richard has the idea to make the cars 'hotels'. James modifies his Vo lvo by add ing a library, Rich ard add s a coo ker and Jeremy a dds a coffin. The coffin h e uses to put his clothes in, he slee ps on Eg yptian Cotton. They leave for Lake Edward , camp ing overnight th ere beca use of its beauty before head ing in search o f the r iver headi ng for Lake Kivu. None of the rivers connect the lake as th ey al l hea d east rather than south. They give up , leaving them disappointed. The n Jere my looks at a map and discovers the source o f the Nile must be on the other s ide of Lake Victoria. His reasoning is that the Med iterranean S ea is e ffec tively an i nland sea and so Gibraltar is the tru e mo uth of the Nile, ra ther than Ale xandria in Egypt. A fter disco vering this they decide tha t th ey must dri ve st raight to the other side of Lake Victor ia to get to the southeast coast in Tanzania near the S erengeti.
