Al so, the rally te am composed of wa r amp utees (previ ously me ntioned in series 17, episo de 6) finall y completed their challenge of finishin g the 2013 Dakar Rally. Revi ew: James reviews the new Bentley Conti nental G T, and notes the new engi ne and subtle r ide charac teristics. Belie ving that the Be ntley, with four wheel drive system an d a big, powerf ul en gine, can handle th ings worse than a Welsh countryside road, Jam es takes the car onto a Welsh stage of the World Rally Championship, with Kris Meeke behind the wheel, and James being t he co- driver. D espite the car having less grip, mor e weight, an electroni c handbra ke (unsuita ble for us age on a rally stage) and James not being prof icient at giving pace notes, the Bentley was actu ally faster than one of the full WRC cars. Jeremy cheer s Dami an up by maki ng a separate board for snow (he justs put the time underneath and to the side of th e fa stest lap time on that bo ard) and s ays tha t he is the fastest dri ver ever on their "snow board". Challenge: Jeremy attempts to build a car smaller t han th e Peel P50, naming hi s creat ion the P45. It was based on a qu ad bik e, with bodywork fitte d, designed to wrap around the driver. He then presented his idea to the ' ;Dragons'; in a Dragons'; Den styl e format. All of the dragons d eclare the mselves "out " a nd back in the st udio, Ric hard concludes that for the P45 to be p ut in prod uction, Jeremy would have to be dead. 149 Series 19, Episode 2 3 Februar y 2013 Mick Fleetwoo d Challenge, Part 1: In anot her challenge , the presen ters picked three sup er cars to t ake on an epic race. Since it was Hammond39;s turn t o select t he chal lenge locati on, the te am went to the We stern United States. J eremy selec ted the Lexus LFA , James chos e th e new Aston Ma rtin Vanq uish, and Richard took the SRT Vipe r. Aft er a b rief drive in the Nevada d esert, the trio hea ded to Las Vegas Motor Speedway, specif ically th e drag strip, to compete in drag rac es organized by th e Las Vegas Police Department; whom orga nized it with the theory that allowi ng people to dra g race, le gally, at a closed circ uit, would prevent street raci ng. Despite the high performan ce of the ir cars, the trio were beaten by modified produ ction cars, and 4WD cars , in each o f thei r drag races. News: Je remy comes up with a solution on how to solve the c risis aff ecting Britain's town cent res: sac king all traffic wardens and re moving double yello w li nes. The trio then review a Chinese produ ct d esigned to stop drowsiness behind the whee l, before they took a first look at the 2013 Jaguar F-Ty pe. They prai sed its styling, but criticiz ed its high price ta g of £60,000, as well a s its targe t audienc e. James mentions Peugeot Citroen' s ca r intended to run on compresse d air; Jerem y attempted to use a fire extingui sher to demonstrate, but fa iled after only causing himself to turn slowly a round. Challe nge, Part 2.: After leaving Las Vegas, James and Richard ma ke fun of Jeremy9;s LFA fo r lacking not only Blue tooth conne ction and iPod co nnector s, but cu p holders, despite being the m ost expensiv e car. They are then tasked to head to W illow Spring s Inte rnational Motorsports Park, but they instead stop on a gr ooved road, where each car drives o ver the g rooves and produces notes. When they reach W illow Springs, they are forced to play an aerial versi on of Laser Quest , where they would drive 5 laps around the tr ack, whilst being c hased by two Aer macchi SF.260 armed with laser guns. In the end, James won the challen ge by being hit only 17 ti mes. Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Flee twood Mac's Mick Fle etwood drove the Kia Cee'd aroun d th e Test Track with a l ap of 1:4 5.4. Challenge, Part 3: Departing Willow Springs, the gr oup headed for Los Angeles, Califor nia. In ord er to do "real world" test ing, Richard devised a challenge to see w ho cou ld burn the best elevens. The thr ee instead ended up drawing a phall us and left LA. The team then stayed for a nigh t in Palm S pring s. Howev er, th e producers gave them a final cha llenge. The three would drive from Palm Sp rings to the Mexican bord er at Calexico the followin g mornin g, and the last to make it to the Mexic an b order wo uld have to tra vel into the c ountry itself to drive the Mastretta M XT, a Me xican sports car made fun of by the pre senters in an e arlie r series, f or a l ater segment on the show. In rev enge for ta king them to Ame rica, Jeremy and James sabotaged Ham mond 's Viper, causing him to lose 10 minutes in the ra ce. Despite making a s top for fuel, Jeremy made it to the finish line first, with James in second. Richard the n walked to the bo rder being t he last p erson to arr ive. At the studio, J ames and Jere my end by saying that th e Viper was awful and that the Vanquish and LFA were amazing. 150 Series 19, Episode 3 10 F ebruary 2013 Amy Macdonald Review: Je remy reviews the Toyota GT86 and the Su baru BRZ. The cars are almo st identical, but Jeremy prefers the Toyota GT 86. The Stig then compl eted a lap of the Test Track in 1:31:3 . News: They d iscuss the new Sub aru Impreza , which is not comin g to UK , and they then talk about th e new Mase rati Quattroporte. Challenge , Pa rt 1: The produ cers have reserved a single ticket to a football match at the San Siro in Milan, Nort hern Ital y. The trio have a race from Wemble y Stadium t o th e San Siro. Jeremy drives the Shelby Mustang GT500 and Ric hard and Jam es travel on public transport. Similar to the previous race to Monte Car lo, Richard and James are not allowed to use any car s, and Jer emy is not allo wed to use any trains. According to Jere my, since th e last epic race, the trains have becom e faster and b oats have be come slower. Richard and James ope ned up a big lead w hilst travellin g on the Eurost ar, and ar rive in Paris while Jeremy was still crossing th e English Channel on a ferr y. After re aching France, Jeremy discovers that the Mustang onl y holds 50 lit res in its fuel ta nk. After leaving Par is, R ichard and James di scuss what to do upon ar riving in Milan — as there are two o f them but only one tic ket. Hundre ds of miles behi nd, Je remy ends part 1 of the challenge stating o ut loud, "I9;m gonna lose!&quo t; Star in a Re asonably Priced Car: Amy Macdonald dro ve the Kia Cee'd around the Test Tr ack in 1: 44.4. During one of her practice runs, Amy accidentally d estroyed one of t he runway lig hts, which Jeremy gives to h er after reve aling the lap ti me. C hallenge, Pa rt 2: The hi gh speed TGV sl owed down as it app roached the mountains that surroun d Northern Italy. Jeremy began to catch up an d was nearly nec k and neck with th e train, until road works at the Mont Blan c Tunnel s low him dow n. The train starts t o accelerate again and reaches Nor thern Italy ahead of Jeremy. Richar d and James use a tu be networ k to get to the streets near the finish lin e. Ja mes ma intains his oppositio n to run on televisio n and Richard runs off al one to find the finish line, wh ich is at a bar in the IM Villa Veuv e Cliequot . Ja mes then a ssembled a bike which he had h idden in one of his bags and rides to the ba r, only to find t hat Richard is al ready there and ha s won t he race and the t icket to the football mat ch. Moments later, Jeremy arrived and accepted defeat for the first time ever in an epic race of all the series. 151 Se ries 19, Episode 4 17 February 2013 Lewis Hamilton Review: Jeremy reviews the Vaux hall Astra VX R, Ford Focus ST and Renault Megane Renault Sport Cup. The Stig did laps o f each car, the Focus be ing the slowest at 1:29.6, the Astra VXR at 1:28.3, and the Mega ne i n 1:27.7. De spite this, Jer emy chose t he Astra VXR as the best overall ca r of the thr ee. Jere my's te am wins. 1 52 Series 19 , Episod e 5 24 Febru ary 2013 J ames McAvoy Challenge, Part 1: Je remy and Ric hard attempt to design a car targeted at elderly people. Jeremy demo nstrat es the complex ity o f modern cars' dshbo ard. Richard brings a Fiat Multip la and both mod ify it. Jeremy breaks the dashboa rd and replaces it c onsidering it to be too complicated for elders. Ri chard asks for the a irbags sayi ng th at it is danger ous for the elderly who are as de licate as children, and that he needs it for a safety feature . Jeremy make s a speedo meter which rea ds 20 mph at the top speed, he also uses an ol d design switch for rear fog light whi ch does nothing. Jeremy installs a p et-c age and rep laces the b ack seat with high seat chairs and the Fiat badge with a Rov er one. They paint it in beig e after o bserving the shade of a hearing aid. Rich ard uses water-res istan t fabric as seat covers, and while stitchi ng hurts his eye. They c ompl ete the car and end the part 1 w ith Richard wearing heavy banda ges over his left ey e. N ews: Volkswagen will launch GTI ve rsion of the new Golf and GT versio n of Up will b e launched. Kia w ill launch the Pro Cee'd GT. The Min i Paceman is launched, and the trio mock the front e nd of the car, claiming that it looks depressing . The trio a gree that the British are t he best drivers. Alfa-Ro meo releases phot ographs of the Gloria, in which the tr io make f un o f it's name. Richard had arri ved late so James and Jeremy had attempted to pla y te nnis with cars (which has a lot of editing). Review: James reviews the new R ange Rover in L ondon. The new car is comp letely re designed, 400 kg lighter du e to Alum inium bo dy, has active suspe nsion, ne w gearbox, minimalist dashbo ard and offers be tter comfort. James then races it against TerraMax at Nevada Autom otive Te st Centre, Nevada . The race w as to a hill 10 mile across, passing through r ocky terr ain, hill ock, mud, r iver and sand-track s. TerraM ax was switc hed to drone mode during the race to def late the t yres and take a short-cut. The Range Rover's automat ic Terrain Response System is demo nstrat ed. James takes a longer r oute to ascend the hill but still wins the race. At the studio, the tri o consider the dri verless cars t o be not very practical. Star In A Reasonably Priced Car : James McAvoy drove the Kia Cee'd around the Te st Track with a lap of 1:43.6 despite havin g le ss experienc e of driving cars. He dro ve over grassy patch in the last cor ner but manages to keep the car un der control. Chall enge, Par t 2: Jer emy and Richard roa d-test their ca r at Christchur ch, Dorset. The car has lar ge front bumper s made up o f foam, larg e re ar-view mirrors, squeaking ball under the brake-peda l, large magn ifyi ng-glass o n the dashboard, sat nav (voiced by Richa rd Briers) wi th only four des tinatons . The car has an artificial cat on the roof which later fell over on the way of Bingo hal l. Richard later shows his system to fi nd th e location of parked car (the car activa tes a flare and then releases a balloon). Jeremy shows that the radio only plays Horse of the Year Sho w theme on a lo op, which both later find t o be irresis tible to clap along. The name of the car is reveal ed to be The James. They pick up three elderly ladies from a pensi oners' home for road-testing and d rive them to a bowling club where i t is shown tha t Richard fitted the airbag at the rear f or parking ass ist which i nflates the airbag on close proximity. Jeremy and Ri chard b uy food fo r picnic, c hoosing only British f oods. The y attach the shopping tr olley to Tow hitch and head for picnic. The roof of the car leak s as it rains. Jeremy and Richard end up c hoosin g a picnic spot on ro adside where th ey find the trolley to be damaged duri ng reversing and the foo d to be so aked, however they ate the fo od which was n ot ruined. The next day both leave Chr istchurch and Jer emy shows his system to prevent the ca r from being dri ven on the wron g side of the road, the car initially sounds alarm and later the tyres, doors and other parts of the car exp lode w hich st ops the car and renders i t imm obile. At the studio, J ames considers the heater to be complicated, t he tri o thank Richard Briers and announce the Af rica special.< br/> 153 Ser ies 19, Episode 6 3 March 2 013 No Guest First of th e two-episod e Africa Special , taking place in Africa. The episode was shot in 2012. Challen ge, Part 1: Buy used estate cars for up to £1 ,500 in Britain and report at a small village in rural Ugan da. Jeremy a rrive s in a BMW 528i Touring, Richard i n a Subaru Impreza WR X Estate and James in a Vo lvo 8 50R Wagon. The challenge is to find the true s ource of the river Nile. They set off an dis cover that exploring isn& #39;t as d ifficult as first thought when th ey go on a nice easy drive and find Lake Victor ia, of whom the Vict orian Explorers thought was the source of the Nile . However they are then told that it is not the actual source of the Nile an d there were two other disputed locations for i t, one in Rwanda and one in Burundi. Howe ver, Jeremy Cla rkson ins isted that bot h of th ese locations were wrong and decided to head west towards Lake Edward to see whether the re was a link between that lake an d Lake Kivu in Rwanda. In their journey we st, whe re t hey visit t he Enteb be Airport and from th ere see the F ord Scorpio Estate back-up car. They conti nue into Kampala, Ugan da' ;s Capital C ity where they get hel d up in a traffic jam ove rnight, th e most hurrendous traf fic they' ;d ev er seen. They con tinue on well-maintain ed highways west finding their trip incredibly easy be fore r eaching the town of Mbarara in the southwest of the cou ntry, via a stop in Jez za, a village in Mpigi Distr ict. Here they stay in a disgust ing hotel, aft er driving through tea plantatio ns in an attempt t o discover a lovel y teahouse hotel, which in the mind of Ri chard, was b ound to found due to tea program mes he 9;d seen. I n Mbarara they stayed in the Economic Lodge with Jeremy having a bed with faeces on it. They left the hotel disgusted before Richard has t he idea to make the cars ';hotels'. Jam es modifies his Volvo by adding a library, Richard adds a cooker and J eremy adds a c offin. The c offin he uses t o put hi s clothes in, he sleeps on Egyp tian Cotton. Th ey leave for Lake Edw ard, camping overnight there because of its beauty before heading in search of the river head ing for L ake Kivu. No ne of the rivers connect th e lake as they all head east rather than s outh. They give up, leaving t hem disappointed. Then Jeremy looks at a m ap and d iscover s the source of the Nile must be o n the o ther side of Lake V ictor ia. His reasoning is that the Mediterra nean Sea is effectivel y an inland sea and so Gibraltar is the true m outh o f the Nile, rather than Alex andr ia in Egypt . Aft er discovering this th ey de cide that they must d rive straight to th e ot her side of L ake Victoria to get to the sou theast coast in Tanz ania near the Se rengeti.
