J ames May turned fifty the previous week. Also, the r ally team co mpos ed of war amputees (previ ously mentioned in series 17, episode 6) fi nally completed their challenge of fi nishing th e 2013 Dakar Rally. Review: James rev iews t he ne w Bent ley Continental GT, and notes the new engine and su btle ride characteristics. Believ ing that the Bent ley, with four wheel drive system and a big, powe rful engi ne, can hand le thi ngs worse than a Wel sh co untryside road, James takes the car onto a Welsh stag e of th e Worl d Rally Championshi p, with Kris Meeke b ehind the whe el, and Jam es being the co-driver . Desp ite the car having le ss grip, more wei ght, an electronic ha ndbrake (unsuitable for usag e on a rally stage) an d James not being profici ent at giving pace notes, the Bentley was actually fas ter than on e of the full WRC cars. Star In A Reasonabl y Priced Car: Dam ian Lewis takes his tu rn in the ca r, and drifts the Kia Cee 'd arou nd the snow- coated test track and crosses the finish line sideways, setting th e slowest e ver time of 2:09 .1. Jeremy cheers Damian up by making a separat e boar d for snow (he justs put th e time underneath and to the side of the fastest lap time on that board) and says tha t he is t he fast est driver ever on their "snow board". Challe nge: Je remy attempt s to build a car smaller than th e Peel P50, nami ng his creatio n the P 45. It was based on a qu ad bike, wit h bo dywork fit ted, designed to wr ap around t he driver. He then presented his idea to the ' ;Drag ons39; in a Drag ons' Den style format. Since it was Hammond's turn t o select the challenge locati on, the team went to th e Western Uni ted States. Jeremy selected the L exus LFA , James chose the new Aston Martin Vanquish , and Richard took the S RT Viper. After a brief dri ve in the Nevada desert, the trio he aded to Las V egas Motor Speedway , specifica lly the drag strip, to com pete in drag r aces organized by the La s Veg as P olice Dep artment; whom org anized it w ith the t heory that allowin g people to drag race, legal ly, at a closed cir cuit, would prevent street racing. Despi te the high performance of their cars, the trio were beat en by modified product ion cars, and 4WD cars, in e ach of the ir drag rac es. News: Je remy comes up wit h a so lution on h ow to solve the cr isis affecting Britain' s town centres: sacking all traffic ward ens and remo ving do uble yellow lines. The trio then review a Chinese product designed to stop dro wsin ess behind the wheel, b efore they took a first look at the 2013 Jaguar F-Ty pe. They praised it s styling, but criticized its h igh pri ce tag of £60,000, as well as its tar get audience. James mentions Pe ugeot Citroen 9;s car intended to run on com pressed ai r; Je remy att empted to use a fire extinguishe r to demonstra te, but failed aft er only causing himself t o turn slowly around. Challenge, Part 2. : After leaving Las Ve gas, James and Rich ard make fun of Jeremy's LFA for lac king not o nly Blu etooth co nnection and iPod connec tors, b ut cup hol ders, de spite being the most expensive car. They are then tasked to head to Willow Springs In ternational M otor sports Park, but they instead stop on a groove d road, where ea ch ca r drives over the grooves and p roduces notes . When they reach Willow Springs, they are force d to play an aerial version of Laser Quest, where t hey w ould drive 5 laps around t he track, whilst bei ng chased by two Aermacchi S F.260 armed with l aser guns. In the end, James won t he challenge by being hit only 17 times. Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Fle etwood Mac39;s Mick Fleetw ood drove the K ia Cee'd around the Te st Track with a l ap of 1 :45.4 . Challenge, Part 3: Departing Willow Sp rings, the g roup headed for L os Angeles, California. I n order t o do & quot;real world" testing, Rich ard devi sed a cha llenge to see who could burn the b est el evens. The three inst ead ended up drawing a phallus and left LA. The team then stayed for a night in Palm Sprin gs. However, the producers gave t hem a f inal chall enge. The thr ee would drive from Palm Springs to the Mexican b order at Calexico the following morning, and the last to make it to the Mexican border wo uld have to travel int o the country itself to drive the Mastretta MXT, a Mexican sports ca r made fun of by the presenters in an earlier ser ies, for a later se gmen t on the show. In revenge for taking them to Amer ica, Jeremy and James sa bota ged Hamm ond' s Viper, causing him to lose 10 minut es in t he race. D espite maki ng a sto p for fuel , Jerem y made it to the fini sh line first, with James in second. Richar d then walked to the border bei ng the la st person to arrive. At the studio, James and Jeremy end by saying that the Vipe r wa s awful and that the Vanquish and LFA were amazing. 150 Se ries 19, Episode 3 1 0 Febru ary 2013 Amy Mac donald Review: Jeremy reviews the Toyota GT86 and the Subar u BRZ. The cars are almost iden tical, but Jeremy prefers the Toyota GT86. The Stig th en completed a lap of the Test Trac k in 1:31 :3. News: They dis cuss the n ew Subaru Impre za, which is not coming to UK, and they then talk about the new M aserati Qua ttroporte. Cha llenge, Part 1: The produce rs have reserved a single ticket to a football matc h at the San Si ro in Milan , Northern Italy. The trio have a race from Wembley Stadium to the S an Siro. Jeremy drives the Sh elby Must ang GT50 0 and Rich ard and Jam es travel on public tr ansport. Similar to the previous race to Monte C arlo, Richard and Jam es are not allowed t o use any ca rs, and Jerem y is not allowed to use a ny tra ins. According to Jeremy, since the last epic race, the tra ins have become faster and bo ats hav e become slower. Richa rd and James opened up a big lead whilst travelling on the Eurostar, and arrive in Par is while Jeremy was still cros sing the English Channel on a ferry. After reac hing France, Jeremy discovers that the Mustang only holds 50 litres in its fuel tank. Af ter leaving Paris, R ichard and J ames discuss w hat to do upon arriving in Mil an — as there are two of them but only on e ticket. H undre ds of miles be hind, Jeremy ends part 1 of the c hallenge stating out loud, &qu ot;I'm gonna lo se!" ; Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Amy Ma cdonald drove the Kia Cee';d a round the Test Track in 1:44.4 . During one of her practice runs, Amy accidentally destroyed one of the runway ligh ts, whic h Je remy gives to her afte r revealing the lap time. Challenge , Part 2: The high speed TGV slowed down as it ap proac hed the mountains that surr ound Northern Italy. Jeremy began to catch u p and w as nearly neck and neck with the train, unti l road works at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slow him down. The train starts to accelera te again and reaches Northern Italy ahead of Jeremy. Richard a nd James use a tu be ne twork t o get to t he street s near the finish line. James ma intains his opposition to ru n on tel evision and Rich ard runs off alone to find the finish line, which is at a bar in the I M Villa Veuve Cliequot. James then assembled a bi ke which he had h idden in one of his bags and rides to the bar, only to find that Richard is already the re and has won the race an d the t icket to the football match. Moments later, Jeremy a rrived and accepted defeat for the first ti me ever i n an epic ra ce of all the se ries. 151 Series 19, Epi sode 4 17 February 2013 Lewis Hamilton Review : Jeremy reviews the Vaux hall Astra VXR, Ford Fo cus ST and Renault Megane Renaul t Sport Cup. The S tig did lap s of each car, the Focus being the slowe st at 1:29.6 , the A stra VXR at 1:28.3, and the Megane in 1:27. 7. Despit e this, Jeremy chos e the A stra VXR as the best overall c ar of the th ree. News: They di scuss the newest c ars, such as the Al fa Romeo 4C, the nex t generation Ford Must ang would be sold in Great Britain, but the UK version would come with a 2.0 EcoBoost engine , and the importance of the handbrake turn in "mal e development". Review : Jeremy tes ts the all new Kia Cee'd, putting i t throug h a myriad of strange road tests. Including Matt LeBlanc doing a lap with both the old and new Cee';d, Br uce Willis (in chara cter as John McClan e) testing the horn of the Cee39;d, Eric Clapton testing its auxiliary input ja ck, and Jeremy testi ng the Cee'd';s self parallel parki ng feature . Review : As punishment for losing the previous race, R ichard is forced to revi ew the Mastret ta MXT in Mexico. Minding his words, h e states that the MXT was an ambitious undertaking for the firs t-time manufac turer, but that it had its share of flaws. Jeremy 9;s team wi ns. 152 Series 19, Episode 5 24 February 2013 James McAvoy Challenge, Part 1: Jeremy and R ichard attempt to design a c ar targeted at elderl y people. Jeremy demonstrates the complexity of modern cars' dsh board. Richard brings a Fia t Multipla and both modify it. Jeremy breaks the dashboard and replac es it considering it to be too complicated f or elders. Richard asks for the airbags saying tha t it is dang erous for th e eld erly who a re as de licate as child ren, and that he needs it for a safety feature. Jeremy makes a speedometer which reads 20 mp h at the top s peed, he also uses an old design switch for rear fo g lig ht which does nothing . Jer emy installs a pet-cage and replaces th e back seat with high seat chairs and the Fiat badge with a Rover one. They paint i t in beige after observing the shade of a hearin g aid. Richard uses water- resistant fa bric as seat covers, and while stitching hu rts his eye. They complete the c ar and end the par t 1 with Richard wearing heav y bandages over his left eye. News: Volksw agen will launch G TI version of the new Golf and GT ver sion of Up will be launched. Kia will launch the Pro Cee9;d GT. The Mini Paceman is l aunched , an d the trio mock the front end of t he car, claiming that it looks depre ssing. T he trio agree that the British are the best drivers. Alfa-Romeo relea ses photog raphs of the Glori a, in which the trio make f un of it 39;s name. Richard h ad arrived late so J ames and Jeremy had attempted to play tennis with cars (which has a lot of edi ting) . Review: James reviews the new Range Rover in London. The new car is completely redes igned, 400 kg lighter due to Aluminium body, has active suspe nsion, new gearbox, minimalist das hboard and offers b etter comfor t. James then races it agains t Ter raMax at Nevada Automotive Test Centre, Nevada. The ra ce was to a hill 10 mile across, passing through rocky terrain, hillock, mud, ri ver an d sand-track s. TerraMa x was switched to drone mode during the race to deflate the tyres and take a short-cut. The Range Rover's automatic Terrain R esponse System is demonstrated. James takes a l onger rout e to ascend the hi ll but still wins the race. At the studio, the trio consider the driverles s cars to be not very practical. Star In A Reason ably Priced Car: James McA voy drove the Kia Cee'd around the Test Track with a la p of 1: 43.6 despite having l ess experienc e of driving cars. He drove over gras sy pa tch in the last corner but m anages to keep the car under control. Ch allenge, Part 2: Jer emy and Richard roa d-test their car a t Christchurch, Dor set. The c ar has large front bump ers ma de up of foam, large rear-view mirrors, squeaki ng ball under t he brake-pedal , large magnify ing-glass on the dashboard, sat nav (voiced by Richard Briers) with only four destina tons. T he car has a n artificial cat on the roof w hich later fell o ver on the way of Bing o hall. Richard lat er shows his system to find the locat ion of parked car (the car act ivates a flar e and then releases a balloon). Jere my shows that the radio only plays Horse of the Y ear Show theme on a loop, wh ich both l ater find to be irresistible to clap along. The n ame of th e car is reveal ed to b e The James. The y pick up three elderly ladies from a pensi oners' home for road-testing and drive them to a bowlin g club wher e it is show n tha t Richard fitted t he airba g at the rear for parking assist which inflates the airbag on close proximity. J eremy and Richard buy food for picnic, choosing only British foods. They attach the shopping t rolley t o Tow hitch and head for picnic . The ro of of the car lea ks as it rains. Jeremy and Richard en d up choosing a picnic spo t on roadside where they find the trolley to be dam aged duri ng revers ing and the foo d to be soaked, how ever they ate the food which was not ruined. Th e next day b oth leave Christch urch and Jeremy sh ows his system t o prevent the car f rom being driven on the wrong side of the road, the car initial ly s ounds alarm and la ter the tyres, door s and other parts of the c ar explode which stops the car and r enders it i mmobile. At the studio, Jame s consider s the heater to be comp licated, t he trio thank Richard B riers and announce the Afri ca special. 1 53 Serie s 19, Episode 6 3 Marc h 2013 No Guest First of the tw o-episode Africa Sp ecial, taking place in Africa. The episode was shot in 20 12. Challenge, Part 1: Bu y used estate cars for up to £1,500 in Britain and r eport at a small village in rural Uga nda. Jeremy arrives in a BMW 528i Tou ring, Richard in a Subaru Impr eza W RX Estate and James in a Volvo 850R Wagon. Th e challe nge is to find the true source of the ri ver Nile. They se t off an di scove r that explorin g isn't as difficul t as first thought when they g o on a nice easy drive and find Lake Victor ia, of whom the Vi ctorian E xplor ers thought was the source of the Nile. H owev er they are then told th at it is not the actu al source of the Nile and there were two other disputed locations for it, on e in Rwan da and one in Burundi. Howe ver, Jeremy Clarkson insisted that both of t hese locations were wrong and decided to head west towards Lake Edward to see whether there was a link betwe en th at lake and Lake Kivu in Rw anda. In their journey we st, where they visi t th e Entebbe Airport and from there see the Ford Scorpio Estate b ack-up car. They continue into Kampa la, Uga nda's Ca pital City where they get held up in a t raffic j am overnight, the most hurrendous traffic they' ;d ever seen. They continue on well-ma intaine d highways west fin ding their trip incredi bly eas y before reaching the t own of Mbarar a in the south west of the country, via a stop in J ezza, a village in Mpigi Distr ict. Here they stay in a disgusting h otel, after driving throu gh t ea plantations in an attempt to discover a lovely teahous e hotel, which in the mind of Richard, was bound to found due t o tea pro grammes he'd seen. In Mbarara they stayed in the Econo mic Lodge w ith Jeremy havin g a b ed with faeces on it. They left the ho tel disgusted before Richa rd has the idea to make the cars 'ho tels';. James modifies his Volvo by adding a library, R ichard a dds a cook er and Jerem y ad ds a coffin. The coffin he uses to put his clothes in, he sleeps on Egyptian Cotton. They leave for La ke Edward, camping overnight there because of its bea uty before he adin g in search of the river heading for Lake Kivu. None of the rivers con nect the lake as they a ll head ea st rat her t han south. T hey give up, leaving th em disappointed. Then Jeremy looks at a map an d discove rs the source o f the Nile must b e on the other side of Lake Vi ctoria. His reas oning is that the Medit erranean Sea is e ffectively an inland sea and so Gibral tar is the true mouth of the Nil e, rathe r than Alexandria in E gypt. After discove ring this the y deci de that they must d rive st raight to the other side of Lake Victoria to get to t he southea st coa st in T anzani a nea r the Serengeti.
