Since it w as Hammond& #39;s turn to se lect the  challenge locatio n, the tea m went to  the Western United Sta tes.  Jeremy selected the Lexus LFA, James chose the new Aston M artin Va  nquish, and Richard took the  SRT Viper. A  fter a brie f drive in the Nevada desert, the trio head ed to Las Ve gas Motor Speedw ay, specif ically t he drag  stri p, to compete in drag races organized by the Las Vegas Police Departme  nt; whom o rganized it with the theor  y that  allowing  people to  drag race, legally, at a clo sed circuit, would preven t street  racin g. Desp ite the high pe rformance  of t heir cars, the trio were beate n by modifie d production cars, and  4WD cars, i  n each of t heir drag races.　　News: Jere  my comes u p with a sol utio n on how to solve the crisis  affecting Britain&# 39;s to wn centres: sack  ing all  traf fic war dens and re moving double yellow lines . James  mentions Peugeot Citro en's car intended to run o n compressed air; Jeremy attempted to use  a fire e xtingu isher to dem onstrate, but fail ed after only causing himself to turn slowly ar ound.　　Challenge, Part 2.: After leaving Las Vegas, J ames and Richard make fun of Jere my's   LFA for lack ing not only Blue tooth connectio  n and  iPod connector s, but cup  holders, despite being  the most ex pensive c ar. They ar  e then t asked to hea d to Willow Springs International Motorsp orts Park, but they instead  stop  on a groove d road, wher e eac h car drives over the grooves and produc es not  es. When th ey reach  Willow Spri ngs, they are forced to play an aerial version o f Laser Quest , where they woul d drive 5 la ps around the track, whilst being ch ased by two Aermac chi SF.260  armed with lase r gun s. In the en d, Jame s won the chal lenge by bein g hit only   17 time s.　　Star  in a Reasonab ly Priced Car:  Fleetwood Mac's Mick Fleet wood drove the Kia Cee& #39;d  around the Test Track with a lap of 1:4 5.4.　　Challenge, Part 3:  Departing Willow S prings, the group heade d for Los Angeles, California. In orde r to do "real world"  ; testing, Rich  ard devise d a chall  enge to see who could burn  the best elevens. The three inste ad ended up drawing a phal lus and  left LA. The team then stayed for  a night in Pal  m Sp  rings. Ho wever, t he produce rs gave th em a fin al chal lenge. The three would drive from P  alm Sprin gs to the Mexica n border at Calexi co the following  morning,  and the last to make it t o the Mexican  border would have  to tr avel in to the country itself to drive the Mastretta MXT, a Mexican spo rts car made fu n of by the presenter  s in an earlier series, for a later segment on the show. In rev enge for taking them  to Am erica, Jeremy and James sabotag ed Hammond 9;s Viper, causing h  im to lose 10 minutes in the race. Despite making a stop f  or fuel, Jeremy made it to the finis h line first, with Ja mes in second. Richard then wal ked to th e border b eing the last per  son to arrive. The trio  have  a race fr om Wembley St  adium to the San Siro. Jeremy drives  the Shelby Mustang GT 500 and R ichard and James tra  vel on public tr ansport. Similar  to the previous rac e to  Monte Carlo, Rich ard and James are no t allowed to use any cars, and Jeremy is not  allowed to use any trains. Acc ording to Jeremy, sinc  e the last  epic race, t he trains h ave beco me faster an d boats have   become slo wer. Richard and James  opened up a big lead  whi lst travelli ng on t he Eurostar, an d arrive in Paris wh ile Jer emy was still cr  ossing the  English Channel on a ferry.  After reach ing France, Jeremy discovers that the M ustang o  nly holds 5 0 litres in its fuel tank. A fter  leaving Pa ris, Richard a nd James d iscuss what to do  upon arriving in Milan — as there are two of th em b  ut only o ne tick et. Hu  ndreds of miles  behind, Jeremy  ends pa  rt 1 of the challenge statin g out loud , "I'm gonn  a lose!   &quo t;　　Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Amy Mac donald drove the Kia Cee'd around the Te st Track in 1:44.4. During one of her practice runs, A my accidentally destroyed one of the runway lights, which Jerem y gives to  her after r evealing the lap   time. 　　Challenge, Pa rt 2: The high  speed TGV slowe d down as i  t approached the mountains that surround Nor ther n Italy. Jeremy be gan to  catch up and was  nearl  y neck and  neck with the train, un  til road works at the Mont  Blanc Tunnel slo w him dow n. The tr ain starts to acce lerat e again a nd re aches Nort hern Italy ahead of Jeremy.  Richard  and James use a tube network to get t  o the stree ts near the finish line. J  ames maintains his opposition t o run on telev ision and Richard runs off al one to find the finish line,  which i  s at a bar in  the IM Vi lla V euve Clie quot. James then assembled a  bike whi  ch he had hidden in one of  his bags and rides to the bar , only to find t hat Richard  is already there  and h  as won  the race and the tick et to t  he football match. De spite  this, Jerem  y chose  the Ast ra VXR as  the bes  t ove  rall car of the thr ee.　 　News: They discuss the ne  west cars, s uch as the A lfa Ro  meo 4C, the next generation  Ford Mustang  would be  sold in  Great Britain, but the UK version would come with a 2.0 Ec oBoost engin e, and the im portance o f the handbrake tur n in " male  development".　　Review:  Jeremy tests the all new  Kia Cee'd, putting i t through  a myriad  of strange road  tests. Including Matt L eBlanc doi ng a lap wi th both th e old and new C ee'd, Br uce Willis (i  n charac ter as John  McC lane) testing the h orn of the Cee' ;d, Eric Cl apton tes ting i ts auxiliary input jack, and  Jere  my testi  ng t he Cee'd9;s self  parallel parking feature.　　Star in a Reasonably Priced Car : Lewis Hamil ton opens up about his move from McLaren to Merced es AM G an d take  s the old Suzuki  Liana  around t he Test Tra ck, setting the fastest F1  time, a 1:4 2.9. 　　Review: As  punishment for losing the pr evious race,  Richard is for ced to revi ew the  Mastrett a MXT in M exico. Jeremy demonst rates the c omplexi ty of modern cars' dshboard. Richar  d bri ngs a Fiat Multipla and  both mo dify  it. Jeremy bre  aks the da shboard and replaces it considering it to be too complicate d fo r elders. Richard a sks for the  airbags  saying that it i s dangerous for  the elderly  who are as delicate as children,  and that he need s it for a safety feature. Jeremy makes a speedometer  which reads 20 mph at the top spe  ed, he also uses  an old design switch for r ear fog light whi ch does nothin g. Jeremy installs a pet-cage and replac es the back seat with high seat chai rs and the Fiat badge with  a Rover one. T hey paint it in b eige after  observing the shade of a hearing aid. Ric hard uses water-re sistant fabric as seat covers, and while stitching hur ts his eye. They co mplete the car and end the pa rt 1 with Richard  wearing heavy bandages  over  his left e ye.　　News:  Volks wagen will launch GTI ver sion of the new Golf and GT version of Up will be launched. Kia will launch the Pro Cee'd GT. The Mi  ni Pacem an is launched, and the trio mock  the front end of the car,  claiming  that it lo oks depressing. The trio agree that the British are  the best drivers. Alfa-Romeo releases photographs of the Gloria, i n whic  h the trio m ake fun of it's name. Richard had arri ved late so James and Jerem y had attempted  to play ten nis with cars (which has a   lot of editing).　　Review: James reviews the new Range  Rover in  London.  The new car is comple tely redesigned, 400 kg ligh ter due to Aluminium body, has  active suspens ion, ne w gearbox, minimalist  dashboard and  offers better comfort. James then  race s it against  TerraMax  at Ne vada  Automoti ve Te st Centre, Nevada . The race was to   a hill 10 mile across, passing  through  rocky  terrai n, hillock, mud, river and san d-tracks. TerraMax  was switched to drone mode during  the race to deflate th e tyres and take a s hort-cut. The Rang  e Rover's au  tomatic Terrain Resp onse Syste m is demon strated . James  takes a longer route  to  ascend the hill but still wins the race. At the  studio, the trio consider the driverless cars  to be not very   practical.　　Star I n A Reasonabl y Priced Car: Jame s McAvoy d rove the   Kia Ce e'd   around the Test Track with a l ap of 1:43.6 despite  having  less experience of driving cars. He dro ve ove r grassy  patch in the last corner but manages to keep the car under co  ntrol.　　Chall enge, Part 2: Je remy and  Richard r oad-test their ca r at Christc hurch, Dors  et. The car ha  s large front bumpers ma  de up of  foam, large  rear-view mirrors, sq ueakin g ball under the brake-pedal, large  magnifying-glass on the dashbo ard, sat nav (voi ced by Richard Briers) with only four destin atons. The  car has an artificial cat on the roof which later fell over  on the way of Bingo hall. Richard later shows his system to find the loc ation of parked car (the c ar activates a flare and then rel eases a ba lloon) . Jeremy shows tha t the  radio only plays Horse of the  Year Show theme on a  loop, which both l ater find  to be irresistible  to cl ap along. The name o f the car is revealed to be The James. They pick up three elderly l adies from a pensioners' home for road -testing and drive them to a bowli  ng c lub where it is sho wn that Richard fitted the ai rbag at the rear for pa  rking assist which inflates the  airbag on  close proximity. Jeremy and Richard bu  y food f  or picnic, c hoosing only British foo ds. T hey attach the shop ping trolley to Tow hitch and head for picnic. The roof of the car leaks as it rains. Jer emy and R ichard end up choosing a   picnic  spot on ro adsid e wh ere they find the trolley  to be dama ged during reversing and the food to be so aked, however they at e the food which was not  ruined. The next day both l eave Christchurch and J eremy show s his system to preven t the car from be ing driven on  the wrong side of  the road,  the car ini tially sounds alarm  and later th e tyres, doors and other  parts of the car explode  which stops the car and renders it im  mobile. The episode wa s shot in 2 012.　　Challenge, Part 1: Bu y used estate cars for up to £1,5 00 in Britain and report  at a  smal l village in rural Uganda.   Jeremy  arrives in a  BMW 528i Touring, Richard in a Subaru Imp reza WRX Es tate and J ames in   a Volvo 850R Wagon. The ch allenge is to f ind the true  source of the river  Nile.　　They se t off  an discover that explori ng isn 't as diffic ult as first  thought when  they go on   a nice easy  drive and find Lake Victoria, of wh om the Vic torian  Explorers thought was the source of the Nile.  However they are  then told  that it is n ot the actual source of the Nile and there were two  other dispu ted locations for it,  one in Rwanda a nd one in Burundi. However, Jer emy  Clarkson   insisted that  both of  these locations were wr ong and d  ecided to head west to wards Lake Ed ward to  see  whet her ther e was a link bet ween that lake an d Lake K ivu in Rwan da.　　In their jou   rney  west, where they visit the Entebbe Ai rport  and from there s ee the F ord Sco rpio Estate back-up  car. They co ntinue  into  Kampala, Uganda's Capital C ity w here they get held up in a t raffic jam overnight , the most h urrend  ous traffic they' d ever seen.　　T hey contin ue on well -mainta ined highways w est finding the ir tri p incr edibly easy b  efore reachi ng the town  of Mbarara in the southwest of the country, via a  stop in Jezza, a village in Mpigi District. Here the y stay in a disgusting hotel, after driving through tea plantations in an attempt to disco  ver a lo vely teaho use h otel, which in the mi nd of Ric hard, was bound to fo und due to tea program mes he'  d seen.　　In Mbarara they stayed in the Ec onomic Lodge wi  th Jeremy having  a bed with faece s on it. They left  the hotel disg usted bef  ore Richard has the idea to make the cars &  #39;hotels'.  James modifies his Vo  lvo by  adding a libr ary, Richard adds a  cooker and Jeremy   adds a c offin. The   coffin he u  ses to  put his c lothes in, he sleeps on Egyptian C otton.　 　They leave for Lake Edw ard, campin  g overnight there because of i ts beauty before  heading in search of the river hea ding  for Lake Kiv u. Non e of  the rivers connect the lake as they all  head east rather than south. They give up, le aving them di sappointed.  Then Jeremy looks at a map an d discovers the source of the Nile  must be on the other side of Lake Victoria. His reasoning is that the Medit erranean Se a is effecti   vely an  inland s ea and so  Gibraltar is the true mouth of  the Nile, ra ther than Alexandria in Egypt.  　　After d isco vering thi s they decide that the y must driv  e st raight to  the other s ide  of Lake Victoria to get to t he southeast co ast i n Tanza nia near the Serengeti.
