Jerem y claims that he has found a male equivalent version of Fifty Shades of Grey, presenting a kid's book about t ractors. The new Chev rolet Stingray is announced . James May turned fifty the previous week. Also, the r ally team composed of war amputees (previo usly mention ed in seri es 17, episo de 6) finally compl eted their challeng e of fini shing the 2013 Dakar Rally. Review: James r eviews the new Bentley Conti nental GT, and notes the new engi ne a nd subtle ride character istics . Believing that the Bentley, wit h four wheel drive system and a big, powerful engine, can handle things worse than a Wels h countrys ide road, James takes the car onto a Welsh s tage of the World Rally C hampionship, with Kr is Meeke beh ind the wheel, and J ames being the co -drive r. Despite the car havi ng less grip, more wei ght, an electronic handb rake (unsuitable for usag e on a ral ly stage) an d James not being proficient at giving pace note s, the Bentl ey was actually f aster than one of the full WR C cars . Star In A Reasonably Priced Car: Da mian Lew is takes h is turn in the car, and drifts the Kia Cee'd aroun d the snow-coated test t rack and crosses the finish line sideways , setting the slowest ever time of 2:09.1. Jere my cheers Damian up by ma king a sep arate board for snow (he jus ts put th e time un dernea th and to the side of the faste st lap ti me on th at board) and says that he is the faste st driver ever on their "snow board";. Ch allenge: Jer emy attempts to buil d a car smaller than the Peel P50, naming his creation the P45. It w as based on a quad bike, with bodywork fi tted, designed to wrap around the drive r. He th en present ed his idea to the & #39;Dragons' in a Drag ons' Den style forma t. All of the dragons declare themselves "out" and back in the st udio, Ri chard conc ludes that for the P45 to be put i n production, Jeremy would have to b e dead. 149 Series 1 9, Ep isode 2 3 February 2013 Mick Fleet wood Challen ge, Part 1: In anoth er chall enge, th e pr esenters p icked thre e super cars to t ake on an epic race. Since it w as Hammond' ;s turn to select the challenge location, the team went to the Wes tern United States. Jeremy selected the Lexus L FA, James chose the new Aston Martin Vanquis h, and R ichard took the SRT Viper. After a brief d rive in the Nevada desert , the trio headed to Las Vegas Motor Speedway, sp ecifically the drag strip, to compete in dr ag race s organized by the Las V egas Polic e Department; w hom organi zed i t with the theory that allowing pe ople to dr ag race, legall y, at a closed circuit, would prevent st reet rac ing. Despite the hig h pe rformance of t heir car s, the trio were beate n by modified production cars, and 4WD cars, in each of their drag races. News: Jeremy comes up with a solution o n how to sol ve the cris is affecting Britai n's town centre s: sa cking al l traff ic wardens a nd removing double yellow line s. The trio then review a Chinese p roduct designed to st op drowsiness behin d the wheel, bef ore they took a firs t look at the 2013 Jaguar F-Type. They praise d its styling, but criticized its high pric e tag of £60 ,000, as well as its target aud ienc e. James m entions Peugeo t Ci troen's car intended to run on compressed air; Jeremy attempted to use a fire extinguisher to demo nstrate, but failed after only causi ng himself to tur n slo wly around. Challenge, Par t 2.: Af ter lea ving Las Vegas, James and Richard make f un of Jeremy' s LFA for lac king not only Bl uetooth conn ection and i Pod connectors, but cup holders, despite being the most expensive car. They are then tasked to head to Willow Springs Inte rnational Motorsports Par k, but t hey inst ead stop on a grooved ro ad, where each car drives ove r the grooves and produces notes. When they rea ch Willow Springs , they ar e forced to play an aerial ve rsion of Laser Quest, where they would drive 5 laps around the track, whilst being chas ed by two A ermacchi SF .260 armed wit h laser guns . In the end, Jame s won the chal lenge by be ing hit only 17 times. St ar in a R easonably Priced Car : Fleetwood Ma c 9;s Mic k Fle etwood drove the Kia Cee'd around t he Test Track with a lap of 1:4 5.4. Chal lenge, P art 3: Departing Willow Spr ings, the group headed for Los Angele s, California. In order to do &q uot;real wo rld" testing, Richard devi sed a challen ge to see who could burn th e best elevens. The thr ee instead ended up drawing a phallus a nd left LA . The team then stayed for a ni ght i n Palm Springs. However, the produ cers gave them a final ch allenge. T he thr ee would dr ive from Palm Sp rings to the Mexican border at Calexico the following mor ning , and the la st to ma ke it to the Mexican border would have to travel into the country its elf to drive th e Mastret ta MXT, a Mexican spor ts car made fun of by the presenters in an earlier se ries, for a later segm ent on the show. In reve nge for t aking them to Ameri ca, Jeremy and Jame s sabotage d Hammon d's V iper, causing him to lo se 10 m inutes in th e rac e. Despi te making a stop for fuel, J eremy m ade it to the finish line first, with James in second . Richard then walked to the border being the last person to arrive. At the studi o, James and Jeremy en d by s aying that the V iper was awf ul and that the V anquish and LFA were amazing. 150 Series 19, Episode 3 10 February 20 13 Amy Mac donald Review: Je remy re views the Toyota G T86 and the Subaru BRZ. The cars are almost i dentical, but Jeremy prefers the Toyota G T86. The S tig t hen co mpleted a lap of t he Test Track in 1:31:3. N ews: They discuss the n ew Subaru I mpreza, whic h is not coming to UK, an d the y then talk about the new Masera ti Qua ttroporte. Challenge , Part 1: The producers have reserved a s ingle ticket to a footba ll m atch at the San Si ro in Milan, Northern Italy . The trio h ave a rac e from Wembley Stadium to the Sa n Siro. Jer emy drives the Shel by Mustang GT500 and Ri chard and James travel on public transport. Simi lar to the previous race to Monte Carlo, Richard and James a re not allowed to use a ny cars, and Jerem y is not allowed to use any trains. Accor ding to Jeremy, since the last epi c race, the trains ha ve become faster and boat s have b ecome slower. Richard and Jame s opened up a big lead w hilst travelling on the Eurost ar, and arrive in Paris while Jeremy was still crossing the E nglish Chann el on a ferry. After rea chin g France, Jeremy discovers that the M ustang only holds 5 0 litres in its fuel tank. Af ter leaving Paris , Richard and Jam es di scuss wha t to do upon arriving in Milan — a s there are two of them but only one tick et. Hundreds of m iles be hind, Jeremy ends pa rt 1 of the challenge stating out lo ud, & quot;I 9;m gonn a lose!&quo t; Star in a Reasonab ly Priced Car: Amy Macdonald drove t he Kia Cee'd around the Test Tr ack in 1:44. 4. During o ne of he r practice runs, Amy accidental ly destroyed one of the runway lights, which Jer emy g ives to her after revea ling the lap time. Challenge, Part 2: The high spe ed TGV slo wed down as it appr oached the mountains tha t surround Northern Italy. Jeremy began t o catch up and was nearly neck and neck with the train, until road works at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slow him down . The train st arts to accelerate again and reaches Norther n Italy ahead of Jeremy. Richard and James use a tube network to get t o the stre ets near t he finish line. James maintains his opposition to run on television and Richa rd runs off alone to find the finish line, whic h is at a bar in the IM Villa Veuve Clie quot. James the n assembled a bike which he had hidden in one of his bags an d rides to the bar, o nly to find that Ric hard is already there and has won the race and the tick et to the football match. Mo ments later, Jeremy arriv ed and accep ted defeat for the first time ever in an epic race of all the ser ies. 151 Series 19, E pisode 4 17 February 2013 Lewis Hamilton Review: Jeremy reviews the Vau xhall Astra VXR, Fo rd Focus ST and Renaul t Megane Renault Sport Cup. The Stig d id laps of each car, the Focus being the slow est at 1:29 .6, the A stra V XR at 1:28.3, and the Megane in 1:27.7. Despi te this, Jerem y chose the Astra VXR as the b est overa ll car of the three.< br/> News : They discuss the newest cars, such as the Alfa Romeo 4C, the next generatio n Ford Mustang wou ld be so ld in Great Britain, but the UK version would c ome with a 2.0 EcoBoo st engine, and the i mportanc e of the handbrake turn in "male dev elopment" . Review: As punishment for losing the previous race, Ri chard is forced to revie w the Ma stretta MXT in Mexico. Minding his words, he states that the MXT was an ambiti ous undert akin g for the first-t ime ma nufacturer, but that it had its share of flaws . Challenge: Jeremy and James play car rugby u sing Kia Cee 'ds and Kia Sport ages at Twickenham Stadium a nd Stig in Vauxhall Astra Police car as the referee. Jeremy's team wins. 152 Serie s 19, Episod e 5 24 Febr uary 2013 James McAvoy Challenge, Pa rt 1: Jeremy and R ichard atte mpt to d esign a car targeted at elderly people. Jeremy demonstrates the complexit y of mode rn cars' dshb oard. R ichard bri ngs a Fia t Multipla and both modify it. Jeremy breaks t he dashboard and repl aces it cons ider ing it to be too complicated for elders. Richard asks for the airbags s aying that i t is dangerous for the elder ly who are as delicate as children, and that he needs it for a safety feature . Jeremy makes a speedome ter which reads 2 0 mph at the to p spee d, he als o uses an old desi gn swit ch for rear fog light which does nothin g. Jeremy installs a pet-cage and replaces the back seat wit h high s eat chairs and the F iat badge with a Rov er one. T hey paint it in beige after observing the shade of a hea ring aid . Richard uses water-resistan t fabr ic a s sea t covers, a nd while stitching hurts his eye. They complete the car and end the part 1 with Richard wearing heavy bandages over his left eye. News: Volksw agen will l aunch GTI version of the new Golf and G T version of Up will be launched . Kia will laun ch the Pro Cee'd GT. The Mini Paceman is launched, and the trio m ock the front end of th e car, claiming that it looks depressing. The trio agree that the Bri tish are the best drivers. Alfa-Romeo r eleases pho tograph s of the Gloria, in whic h the trio make fun of it& #39;s name. Richa rd had arrived late so James and Jeremy had at tempted to play ten nis with cars (which has a lo t of editing). Review: James reviews the ne w Range Rover in Londo n. Th e new ca r is com pletely redes igned, 400 kg li ghter due to Alu mini um body, has active susp ensi on, new g earbox, minimalis t dashboard and o ffers bette r comfort. J ames then r aces it a gainst TerraMax a t Ne vada Auto motiv e Test Centre, Ne vada. The r ace was to a hill 10 mile acr oss, passi ng through rock y terrain, hilloc k, mud, river and sand-trac ks. Terr aMax was sw itched to drone mode during the race to defla te th e tyres and t ake a short-cut. The Ra nge Rover' ;s automa tic Terrain Response Syst em is d emonstr ated. James takes a longer route to ascend the hi ll but still wins the race. At the studio, the trio consider the dri verl ess cars to be not very practical. Star In A Reasonably Priced Car: James McAv oy drove the Kia Cee'd a round the Test Track with a l ap of 1:43.6 despite having less ex perience of driving cars. He dro ve over grassy patch in the last corner but manages to keep the car under control. Chall enge, Part 2 : Jeremy and Richard road-test thei r car at Chris tchurch, Dorset. The car ha s large fro nt bum pers made up of foam , large rea r-view mirrors, squeaking bal l under the brake-peda l, large magnifying-glass on the da shbo ard, sat nav (voiced by Richard Brie rs) with o nly four destinatons. The car has a n artificial cat on the roof which later fell over on the way of Bingo hall. Richard later sho ws his sy stem to find the location of pa rked car (the car a ctivates a flare and the n releases a balloon ). Jerem y shows that the radio only p lays Horse of the Ye ar Show th eme on a loop, which both la ter find to be irresi stible to clap along . The name o f the car i s revea led to be The James. They pick up three elderly ladie s from a pensioners' h ome for road- testing a nd drive them to a bowling club where it is shown that R ichard fitted the airbag at the rear for parking ass ist which inflates the a irbag on close pro ximity. Jeremy and R ichard buy food for pic nic, choosing only British foods. They at tach the shopping trolley to Tow hitch and head for p icnic. The roof of the car leaks as it rains . Jeremy and Richard end up choosin g a picnic sp ot on roadside wher e they fin d the trolley t o be damaged during reversing and the food to be so aked, however they ate the food whic h was not ruine d. The nex t day both leave Christchurch and Jerem y shows his system to preven t the car from being driven on the wrong side of the road, the car initially sound s alarm and late r the tyres, do ors and other parts of the car explode which st ops the car and re nders it immobile . At the studio, James consi ders the heater to be com plicated , the trio thank Richard Briers and announce the Africa special. 153 Series 19, Episode 6 3 March 2013 No Gu est F irst of the two- episode Af rica Special, taking pl ace in Africa. The episode was shot in 20 12. Challen ge, Part 1: Buy used est ate cars for up to £1,500 in Br itain and report at a sm all village in rural Ugan da. Jeremy arri ves in a BMW 52 8i Touring, Ric hard in a Subaru Impreza W RX Estate and James in a Vo lvo 850R Wagon. The challe nge is to find the true source of the river Nil e. They set off an discover that ex plor ing isn't as difficult as first thou ght when they go on a nice easy drive and find Lake V ictoria , of whom the Vi ctorian Explo rers thoug ht was t he s ource of the Nile. However they are t hen told t hat it is not the actual s ource of t he Nile a nd there were two other dis puted location s for it, one in Rwanda and one in Burundi. Howeve r, Jeremy Clarkso n insisted that both of these loc atio ns were wro ng and dec ided to head wes t towards Lake Edward to see whether the re was a link between that l ake and La ke Kivu in R wanda. In thei r jour ney wes t, where they visit t he Enteb be Airpor t and from ther e see the Ford Scorpio Estate back-up car. They continue in to Kampala, Uganda9;s Capital Ci ty where they get held up i n a traffic jam overn ight, th e most hur rendous traffic they 'd ever seen. They continue on well-m aintained highw ays west finding their trip incre dibly e asy before r eaching the town of Mbarara in the southwest of the c ount ry, via a stop in Jez za, a village i n Mpigi District. Here they stay in a disgusting hotel, after driving through tea plantati ons in an attempt to disco ver a lovely teahouse hotel, w hich in the mind o f Richa rd, was bound to fo und due to tea programmes he'd seen. In Mbarara they sta yed in the Economic Lodge with Jeremy having a bed wi th faeces on it. They left the hotel disgusted be fore Richard has the idea to make the cars &# 39;hotels'. James modi fies his Volvo by adding a library, R ichard adds a cooker and Jeremy adds a coffin. T he coffin he uses to put his clothes in, h e sleeps o n Egyptian Cotton. They leave for Lake Edward , cam ping overnigh t there becaus e of its beauty before heading in se arch of the river heading for Lake Kivu. None of the rivers connect the lake a s they all h ead east rather than south. The y give up, leav ing them disappointed. T hen Jeremy looks at a map and discovers the sou rce of the Nile must b e on the ot her side of Lake Victor ia. His reasoning is that the Medi terranean Sea is effectively an inland sea and so Gibralta r is the true mouth of the Ni le, rather than Alex andria in Egypt. Af ter discovering this they d ecide t hat they m ust drive s traight to the other s ide of Lake Victoria to get to the s outheast coast in Tanzania n ear the Sere ngeti.
