Also, the rally team compose d of war amp utees (previousl y mentioned in series 17, epis ode 6) finally completed their challen ge of fini shing the 2013 Da kar Rall y. Re view: James reviews the new Bentley Continen tal GT, an d notes the new engine and sub tle ride characterist ics. B elieving that the Bentley, with four whee l drive system and a big, powerful engi ne, can handle things worse than a Welsh countryside road, James takes the car onto a Welsh stage of t he Wo rld Rally Champ ionship, wit h Kris Meeke behind the wheel, and James b eing the co-driver. Despite the car hav ing less gri p, more weight, an electro nic handbrake (unsui tabl e for usage on a rall y stag e) and James not being proficient at givi ng pace notes, th e Bentley wa s act ually faster than one of the f ull WRC ca rs. Since it was Hammond's tu rn to select the challen ge location, the team went t o th e We stern U nited Stat es. Jer emy selected the Lexus LFA, James chose t he new As ton Martin Vanquish, and Richard took the SRT Viper. After a brie f dri ve i n the Nevada desert, the trio he aded to Las Vegas Motor Speedway, specif ical ly the drag strip, to compete in drag ra ces organized by the Las Veg as Police Department; whom orga nized it with the theory that a llowi ng people to drag race, legally, at a closed circ uit, would prevent street raci ng. Despite the high performance of t heir cars, the trio were beaten by modified p roduction cars, and 4WD cars, in each of t heir drag races.< br/> News: Jerem y comes u p with a solu tion on how to solve the crisi s aff ecting Brita in's t own centre s: sacking all tra ffic wa rdens and removing doubl e yel low line s. The trio then review a Chinese product designe d to stop drowsiness behind th e wheel , before they took a first look at the 2013 J aguar F -Type. They praised its styling, but criticized its h igh price tag of £60 ,000, as well as its target audience. J ames mentio ns Peugeot Citroen' ;s car intended to run on compr essed air; Jeremy attempt ed to use a fire extinguisher to demonstra te, but failed a fter on ly c ausing himself to turn slowly around. They are then tas ked to he ad to Willow Springs International Motors ports Park, but t hey instead stop on a grooved road, where each car drives o ver the gr ooves and produc es no tes. W hen they re ach Willow Springs, they are forced t o play an aerial version of Laser Quest, where they wo uld drive 5 lap s aro und the track, whilst bein g chase d by t wo Aermacch i SF.260 ar med with laser guns . In the end, J ames wo n the challenge by being hi t onl y 17 ti mes. Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Fleetw ood Mac' ;s Mick Fleetwood drove the K ia Cee 39;d around the Tes t Track with a lap of 1:4 5.4. Chal lenge, Part 3: Depa rting Wi llow Springs, the g roup headed for Los Angel es, California. In order to do " ;real world& quot ; testing, Richard devi sed a challenge to see who could burn the best eleven s. The thre e inst ead ended up drawing a pha llus and l eft LA. The team then staye d for a night in Palm Springs. Howeve r, the producers gave them a final cha llenge. T he three would drive from Pal m Springs to the Mexican b order at Calexico the foll owing morning, and the l ast to make it to t he Mexican border would have to trav el into the country itself to driv e the Mast retta MXT, a Mexican sports ca r made fun of by the presente rs in an earlier seri es, for a later segment on the show. In revenge for taking them to America, Jere my and James sabotaged Hammond's Viper, causing him to lose 10 m inutes in the race. Despite maki ng a stop for fuel, Jeremy made it to the finish line first, with James in seco nd. Richard then walked to th e border being the last person to arrive. At the stud io, Ja mes and Jer emy end by saying that the Viper was awful and that the Vanquish and LF A were amazing. 150 Serie s 19, Episode 3 10 Febr uary 2013 Amy Mac donald Rev iew: Jeremy review s the Toyota GT86 and t he Subaru BRZ. The cars are almost ident ical, but J eremy prefers the Toyota GT86. The Stig the n co mpleted a lap of the Test Track in 1:31 :3. News: They disc uss th e new Su baru I mpreza, which is not coming to UK, and they th en ta lk about the new Maserati Qu attroporte. Challenge, Part 1: The producers have reserved a single ticket to a football match a t th e Sa n Si ro in Milan, Northe rn Ita ly. The trio have a ra ce fr om Wembley Stadi um to the San Siro. Jeremy drives the Shelby Mustang GT500 a nd Richar d and Jame s travel on p ublic transport. Simil ar to the previ ous race to Monte Ca rlo, Rich ard and James are not allowed to use any cars, and Jeremy is not allowed t o use a ny trains. A ccording to Jeremy, sinc e the last epic race, the trains have become faster and boats have become s lower. Richard an d James opened up a big l ead wh ilst travelling on the Eur ostar, and arrive in Paris while Jeremy was stil l crossi ng the En glish Cha nnel on a ferry. After reaching Fra nce, Jeremy discovers that t he Mus tang only holds 50 litr es in its fuel tank. After lea ving Paris , Richard and James discuss what to do upon arriving in Milan — as ther e are two of them but only one t icke t. Hund reds of miles behind, J eremy ends part 1 of the ch allenge stating out loud, " ;I'm gonna lose!& quot; Star in a Reaso nably Priced Ca r: Amy Mac donald dro ve the Kia Cee39;d around the Test Track in 1:44.4. During one of her practice runs, Amy a ccidentally de stroyed one of the r unway lights, which Jer emy gives t o her after revealing the lap time. Challenge, Part 2: The high speed TGV slowed down as it approac hed the mountains that surro und Northern Italy. Jeremy began to catch up and was nearl y neck and neck wi th the train, until road works at the Mont B lanc Tunn el slow him down. The train starts to accelerate aga in and reac hes Nor thern Italy ahead of J eremy. Richard and Jame s use a tube net work to g et t o the s treets near the f inish line. James mainta ins h is opposition to run on television and Richard runs off alon e to find the finish line, which is at a bar i n the IM Vill a Veuve Cliequot. James then assembled a bike which h e had hidden in one o f his bags and rides to the b ar, onl y to find that Richard is already there and h as w on the race and the tic ket to the footba ll match. Moments l ater, Jeremy arrived a nd accepted def eat for the first time ever in an epic race of al l the se ries. 15 1 Series 19, Episode 4 17 February 2013 L ewis Hamilton< br/> Review: Jeremy reviews the Vauxh all A stra VXR, Fo rd Focus ST a nd Renau lt Megane Renault Spor t Cup. Th e St ig did laps of each car, the Focus being the slowest at 1:29.6, the Astra VXR at 1:28.3, and the Megane in 1 :27.7 . Despite this, Jeremy c hose the Astra VXR as the b est o verall ca r of th e three. News: They discuss the newe st cars, such as the Alfa Romeo 4C, the next generation Ford Mustan g would be sold in Great Britain, b ut the UK version would c ome with a 2.0 EcoBoost engi ne, and the imp orta nce of the handb rake turn in "male development". Review: Jeremy tests the all new Kia Cee 39;d, putting it t hrou gh a myriad of strange road test s. Including Matt LeBlanc doing a lap with both th e old and new Cee'd, Bruce W illis (in cha racter as John Mc Clane) test ing the horn of the Ce e';d, Eric Clapton testing its au xiliary input jack, and Jeremy te sting the C ee'd9;s self parallel parking fe ature. Star in a Reason ably Priced Car: Lewis Hamilton opens up about his move from McLaren to Merced es AMG and takes the old S uzuki Lia na around the Te st Track, se tting the fastest F1 time, a 1:42.9. Re view: As punishment for losing the previ ous race, R ichard is fo rced to review the Mastretta MXT in Mexico. Minding his words, he states that the MXT was an ambit ious undertaking for th e first -time manufacture r, but that i t had its share of flaws. Challeng e: Jeremy and Jam es play car rugby us ing Kia Cee' ds and Kia Sportages at Twick enham S tadium and Stig in Vaux hall Astra Po lice car as the referee. Jerem y's team wins. 152 Series 19, Episode 5 24 February 2013 James McAvoy Chal lenge, Part 1: Jeremy and R ichard attem pt to design a car targeted at elderl y peo ple. Jeremy demonstrates t he complexity of mod ern cars ' dshboard. Richard brings a Fiat Multipla and both modify it. Jeremy breaks the dashboar d and replaces it considerin g it to be too complicated for elders. R ichard asks for the airbags say ing that it is danger ous f or t he elde rly wh o ar e as delicate as chi ldren, an d that he needs it for a safety feature. Jeremy mak es a spee dometer which rea ds 20 m ph at the t op spee d, he also uses an old design switch for rear fog light which does nothing. Jer emy installs a pet- cage and replaces t he back seat with high seat chairs and the Fiat badge with a R over o ne. They paint it in beige after observing the shade o f a hearing aid. Richard uses water-resis tant fabr ic as s eat covers, and while stitchin g hurts his eye. They complete the car and e nd the part 1 with Richard w earing he avy bandages o ver his left eye. News: Vo lkswagen will laun ch GT I version of the new Golf and GT version of Up will be launched. Ki a will launch the Pro C ee'd GT. The Mini Paceman is la unched, and the trio mock the front end of the car, claiming that it looks d epressing. The trio agree that the British are the best drivers. Alfa-Romeo rel eases photog raph s of the Gloria, in which the trio make fun of it's name. Rich ard had arrived late so J ames and Jeremy had attempted to play tenn is wi th car s (whic h has a lot of editi ng). Review: James re views the new Range Rover in London. The n ew car is complet ely redesigned, 400 kg li ghter due to Alum inium bo dy, has activ e suspe nsion, new gearbox, mini malist dash board and offers better comfort. Ja mes then races it against TerraMax at Nevada Automotiv e Test C entre, Nevada. The race was to a hill 10 mile acr oss, passing through rocky terra in, hillock, mud, river and san d-tracks. TerraMax was switched to drone mode duri ng the r ace to deflate the tyres and take a shor t-cut. The R ange Rover 39;s automa tic Terrain Response System is demonstrated. James takes a longer route to ascend the hill but still wins the race. At the stu dio, the trio consider the driverless cars to be not ve ry practical. S tar In A Reasonably Priced Car: Jam es McAvoy drove th e Kia Cee 9;d around the Te st Trac k with a lap of 1:43.6 de spite having less expe rien ce of driv ing cars. He drove over grass y patch in t he last cor ner but manages to k eep the car under co ntrol. Ch allenge, Part 2: Jeremy and Ric hard road-test their car at C hristchurch, Dorset. T he car has l arge front bumpe rs made up of fo am, large rear-view mirrors, s queaking b all under the brake-p edal, large magnifyin g-glass on the dashboard, sat na v (voiced by Richard Briers ) wit h only four destinatons . The ca r has an ar tificial cat on t he roof w hich later fell over on the way of Bingo hall. Richard later shows his system to find the location of parked c ar (the car activates a flare a nd then re leases a balloon). Jeremy shows that the radio only plays Horse of th e Year Show theme on a loop, which bot h later find to be irresistible to clap along. The name of the car is revealed to be The J ames. T hey pick up three elderly ladies from a pensio ners' home for road-testing and drive them to a bowli ng club where it is shown that Richard f itted the airbag at the rear for parking assis t which inflates the airbag on close proximit y. Jeremy and Richard buy f ood for picnic, choo sing only British foods. T hey a ttach the shopping trolley to Tow hitch and head for picnic. The roof of the car leaks as it rains. Jeremy and Richard end up c hoosing a picnic sp ot on ro adside where they find the trolley to be d amaged durin g reversi ng and t he foo d to be soaked, however they at e the food whi ch was not ruined. The next day both leave Christchurch and Jer emy shows his system to prevent the car f rom being driven on the wrong side o f the ro ad, the car initially sounds alar m and later the tyres, doors and other parts of the car explode which stops the car and renders it immobil e. At the studio, Jame s cons iders the heater to be com plicated, the trio thank Richar d Briers a nd announce th e Africa special. 153 Seri es 19, E pisode 6 3 March 2013 No Guest First of the two-epi sode Africa Specia l, taking place in Af rica. The epi sode was s hot in 20 12. Challenge, Part 1: Buy used es tate ca rs for up to £1, 500 in Britain and r eport at a small vi llage in rural Uganda. Jeremy arrives i n a BMW 528i Touring, Rich ard in a Sub aru Impreza WRX Estate and Jam es in a Volvo 850R Wagon . The ch allenge is to find the t rue s ource of the river Nile. They set off a n discover that exploring isn ';t as difficult as first thought whe n they go on a nice easy dri ve and find Lake Victoria, of whom the Victorian Explor ers thought was t he s ourc e of the Nile. Howe ver the y are th en told that it i s not the actual source of the Nile and there were two other disputed l ocations for it, one in Rwa nda and one in Bu rundi. Howev er, Jeremy Clarkson insisted that both of these location s were wrong and decided t o head we st towar ds Lake Edward to se e whethe r there was a link be twee n that lake and Lake K ivu in Rwanda. In their journey west, where they visit the Entebbe Air port and from th ere see the For d Scor pio Es tate bac k-up car. They continue into Kampa la, Uganda 39;s Capital City where they get he ld up in a traff ic jam overnight, the most hur rendous traffic they'd ever seen. They continue on well-maintained highways we st finding the ir trip incredib ly eas y before reaching the town of Mbarara in the southwest o f the c ountry, via a stop in Jezza, a village in Mpig i Distr ict. Here they stay in a disgusting hote l, after driving th rough te a plantations in an at tempt to discove r a lovely teahouse hotel, whic h in the mind of Richard, w as bound to foun d due to te a programmes he 39;d seen. In Mbarara they stayed in the Economi c Lodg e with Je remy having a bed wi th faeces on it. T hey left the hotel disgusted before Richa rd has t he idea t o make the cars 9;ho tels'. Ja mes modifies his Vol vo by ad ding a lib rary, Richar d add s a cooker and Jeremy adds a coffi n. T he coffin he uses to put his clothes in, h e slee ps on E gyptian Cot ton. They leave for L ake E dwar d, cam ping overnig ht th ere be cause of its beauty before heading in search of the river heading for Lake Kivu. None of the rivers connect th e lake as t hey all he ad east ra ther than south. They give up, leavin g them dis appointe d. Then Je remy loo ks at a map and discovers the source of the Nile mus t be on the other side of Lake Victoria. His reasoning is that the Mediterranean Se a is ef fectivel y an inland sea and so Gibraltar is the true mouth of the Nile, rather tha n Alexandria in E gypt. Af ter discovering this they de cide that they must drive strai ght to the other side of Lake Victoria to get to the south east coast in Tanzania near the Serengeti.
