Mang an said: "I've been a fan of D ouglas Adams ever sin ce the H itchhiker's rad io series whic h I used to recor d as a child and listen to over a nd over again i n my bedroom. It9;s s uch a th rill to now be playin g one of his brilliant chara cters. &q uot;Dirk is a chaotic , anarchic force of nature with a totally unique take on the world. He is des cribed as &# 39;lazy, untidy, dismissive and unrelia ble'. I9;ve absolutely no idea why they thoug ht I'd be right for the role." The Dirk Gently books have formed the basis of a play and a BBC Radio 4 series but have never before been film ed for TV. Ada ms's ag ent, Ed Victor, said: "For all the years I represen ted the late, great Douglas Adams, t he most substan tial f rust ration for b oth of us was that w e couldn 9;t get films made either of Hi tchhiker or Dirk. " Douglas once sai d, memorably, that ' ;getting a film made in Holly wood was lik e trying t o cook a steak by having a bunch of p eople come into the room an d breathe on it& #39;. Well, we did eventually get a film made in H ollyw ood of Hi tchhik er and, tra gically, Douglas didn't live to see it. No r will he see this adaptatio n of Dirk – b ut it's worth be aring in mind that D ouglas al ways thought Dirk would ma ke a bette r film than Hitchh iker and I fee l sure that this new TV drama wi th a ter rific script by Howard Overman will prove his poin t."
