Mangan said: "I' ;ve been a fan of Douglas Adams ever since the Hitchhi ker 9;s radio series which I used to rec ord as a child and listen to over and over again in my bedroom. It's such a thrill t o now be playing one of his brillia nt char acters. &q uot;Dirk is a chaotic, anarchic force of nature wit h a totally unique take on the world. He i s described as &# 39;lazy, unt idy, di smissive and unreliable'. I've absolut ely no idea why they though t I'd be right fo r th e rol e." The Dirk Gently books have formed the basis of a play a nd a BBC Radio 4 series but have never before b een filmed for TV. Adams's age nt, Ed Victor, said: &q uot;For all the years I represented the lat e, great Douglas Ada ms, the mos t substan tial frustration f or both of u s was that we couldn9;t get films made either of Hi tchhiker or D irk. Well, we did eventu ally get a film made in Hollywood o f Hitchhiker a nd, tragically , Dou glas didn't li ve to see it. Nor will h e see this adaptation of Dir k – but it's worth b earing in mind that Douglas always thought Di rk woul d make a bett er film than Hitchhiker and I feel sure that this new TV drama with a terrific script by Howard Overman will prove his poin t.&qu ot; Shooting begins this week in Bristol on the 60-minute drama, which is be ing made b y ITV Studio s in association with the Welded Tandem Picture Co mpany.
