Each period is separated by a sh ot of a chur ch bell dou ble-exposed on the sky. Although th e fi lm h as a vibrant and instruc tive way of com municating t he diff erent epochs and styl es to studen ts, it does not exhibit the artistic quality that usually distinguishes a Drey er film, except perhaps in some of the cos tumes, which were o riginally made for Day of Wrat h. The board of Dansk Kulturfilm in aut umn 1945 decided that the ir planned churc h film would exclusively be about vill age churches. Dreyer would rework the script that w as written by editor and folk high-school princ ipal Bernhard Jensen, aided by a committee of expe rts consist ing of architect H. Lønborg-J ensen and V ictor Hermansen , curator at the National Museum of Denmark. Dre yer had a fir st draft r eady in mid-March, enti tled Kirken er et gammelt H us (&quo t;The Churc h Is an Old House"), which was distributed to the memb ers o f the committe e for thei r comments. In the last half of July , Dreyer and Victor Hermansen tra velled the country to look at suitable churches. They resea rched the details and at Dreyer’s request a numbe r of technic al chan ges were made to the churc hes, including the removal of porcelain holders for electrical wiring in Tveje Merlø se Church. On 4 July, Dreyer went in advance to Ringkøbing. Shooting was set to start a few days late r wit h the arr ival of the director of photo graphy , Pr eben Frank, who ha d fallen of f a ladder and broken his leg, Fortunately, he wa s ready to cautiou sly start working ag ain within a few days, w ith his leg in a cast. Otherwise , the production went without a glitch. Everywhere, Dreyer said, they were w ell rece ived at the vicarages and they had no problem getting enough extras. On 1 aug ust, the y returned to Copen hagen with almost all their footage in the can. They only neede d to film the ch urch in S kelby, where the weather had been against the m, p lus a Sw edish w ooden church in Heda red. The ec onomy was di stress ed so soon after the war, especially wh en it came to foreign currency, but there were no real wooden chu rches left in Denmark an d building a n inter ior set in the studio w ould be too expensive. Th e finished film was sh own for the first time on 24 September 1947 to a small, closed circle, which incl uded the Minister fo r Ecclesias tical Affairs.
