A t Mac';s urg ing, Norma tried to reason with Paul, but he insists tha t he loves Barbara and laughs her off. Barba ra is equa lly disdainful of her and a grees t o meet Paul fo r dinner that ni ght at his apart ment. Norma' ;s husband Stephe n Lawry is a scienti st lea ving t hat night on a trip to t est a secre t invention on which he has been wo rking for the gover nment and th e war effort. Worried about Barbara, she uses a pretext not to ac company Stephen and goe s to the apartme nt. Whe n Barbar a arrives, she finds Paul's dead body an d thinks that Norma has kille d him, e ven though Norma insists th at he was dead when she arrived. Barba ra threate ns to cal l the polic e un less she leaves Ste phen. Fearing that a scandal will hur t him, Norma agrees. No rma then turns to Mac , who goes to Paul 's apartment w ith Frida y and Ma rty, only to find the body and the rug unde r it missing. A man arrives to replace the rug and Mac hides in a closet, overhearing a tele phone call to Norma's number f rom "Gab riel" to "Vera .&qu ot; Mac acci dentally g ives himse lf away, but with Friday's help overpow ers Gabriel , who refus es to talk . Mac has Ma rty hid e him to keep him un der wraps . Norma returns to her country home un expectedl y, which disc ourage s an es pionag e ring that includes her butler, Hans en, from breaking into Ste phen 's safe and stealing hi s plans. They have k illed Gerente, who was also an agent, and hidden the body. Mac arrives with Frida y at Norma's hou se an d pretends to be her cur mudgeonly "Uncle Mac&quo t; who has come for a visit . His b lindness lulls any suspi cions Ha nsen might have about him. Shortly t hereafter, Barbara comes hom e from an "emer gency rehearsal", called to g et h er out of the house by her director, Cheli Scott, who inveigles a n invitation to spend the night at the Law ry home. Unknown to Barbara and Norma, Cheli is the ringlead er of the spies. Cheli or dered Paul killed be cause his affectio n for B arbara was b eginning to limit h is effectiveness, a nd s he immediate ly suspects Mac is not what he seems . Gabrie l's wife V era, the Lawrys' maid, is also a part of the plot . When Gabriel do es not return home, Vera becomes hysterical with worry. Mac secretly asks Ver a to meet him in the greenhous e, using her worry abou t Gabriel as a lure. She is observed by the others, however, and is killed by Hansen b efore sh e can reach Mac. The spies cut the house's t elephone wi res so th at Ma c and Norma cannot call the poli ce, and Cheli has Mac locked up under guard. Using hi s blind ness as a distraction, Mac ove rpowers his guard and r eleases Friday out a wind ow with instru ctions to ";go ho me and get Marty." Steph en ar rives home and Cheli threatens his family if he does not give h er the fina l step in creat ing his invention, which was not in the safe. Barbara finally realiz es how much Norma act ually cares for her. Mac tries to sta ll f or time, bu t is lo cked in the cellar. When Hansen goes to kill him, Mac has broken the light bu lb and his a dvant age of total d arkness help s him o vercome the spy. Marty and Friday return with the police. When Fr iday is spo tted by a lookout, Mac overpowers him and is saved from being shot by another lookout b y Friday .
