";Siege&q uot; wa s directed by an unknow n Italian director of that period . Althoug h Gilberto Tofano was brought as a profes sional director on the wings of inspira tion made by the French New Wave of those years, he managed t o turn out a very exciting work whic h has caught the Israeli warmth and sense of s ocial siege which surrounds the Israeli w idows, inclu ding th e great ex pect ations from them and the soc ial stigmas. Tofano wr apped his leading lady with lots of warmth and gave a place o f honor to A lmagor's impressiv e pr esence in the film . This is without a doubt one of Almagor's best and most ac curate pe rfor mances. The restrai nt in her perform ance plu s the shoot ing and expressive use of angles by Tofano and h is sof t European touch which was far off from the aggressive local product manage d to produ ce a sense of documenting a n authentic tragedy with a ta ngible pers onal touch t hat minimized the national dimension.
