Despite bot h threateni ng and cajoling behavi or by Kar swell, H olden determines t o proc eed, t hough the o nly cult member willing to ta lk about hi s experien ces is in a prison psychiatric ward, catatonic after alleg edly kil ling yet another cult member. Howe ver, Harrington's niece, Joanna, believes, based on he r uncle9;s notes, that Karswell may ind eed have some satanic po wers derived from an ancient tome in an obscure language which he has been abl e to tran slate, and a ttempts to warn t he skeptic Holden. Karswe ll's m other also attempts to w arn Hol den off. Howeve r, the t hing which begin s to most get to Holden are the occa sional, but mounting, sensory and mental disturbances he beg ins experiencing after an enc ounter wi th Kars well, and the discov ery that, during thi s encoun ter, Karswell secretly slip ped a slip of pa rchment with a cu rse in runic symbols on it into Holden's belongi ngs, a parchment id entical to one Harrington recorded havin g had passed to him i n a si milar manner shortly before his death.. .
