The development and th e growth of the pattern of church architecture is shown. Dreyer in this film shows a series of churches from differe nt periods with ch urchgoers in period clothing. Each peri od is separated by a shot of a church bell doub le-expo sed on the sky. Alth ough the film has a vibrant and inst ructive way of communica ting the different epochs and styles to students, it does not exhibit the artis tic q ualit y that usually disting uishes a Dreyer film, except perhaps in some of t he costu mes, which were o riginally made for Day of Wrath. The board of Dan sk Kultur film in autumn 1945 decided that their planne d church film would exclusively be about villag e chu rches. Dreye r would rew ork the script that was written by editor and folk h igh-school princip al Be rnhard J ensen, aided by a comm itte e of experts consisting of architect H. Lønborg-Jensen and Victor Hermansen, curator at the National Museum of Denmark. Dreyer had a first draft ready in mid-March, entitled Kirken er et gammelt Hu s ("The Ch urch Is an Old House&qu ot;), which was distributed to th e members of the com mittee for their comments. In the last half o f July, Dreyer an d Vic tor Her mansen tra velled the country to look at suitable church es. They resea rched the details and at Dreyer ’s request a number of technica l ch anges were made to the chu rche s, i ncluding the removal of porcelain hold ers for ele ctrical wir ing in Tveje Merløse C hurch. On 4 July, Dreyer w ent in advance to Ringk øbing. Shooting was set to st art a few days late r with the arrival of the direct or of photography, Preben Frank , who h ad fallen off a ladder and broken his leg, Fortunately, he was ready to cautiousl y start wor king again withi n a few days, with his leg in a cast. Oth erwise, th e production went without a glitc h. Everywher e, Drey er said, they were well r eceive d at th e vic arages and they had no problem getti ng enough extras. On 1 augus t, they r eturned to Co penhagen with almo st all their footage in the c an. They only needed to film the church in Skelby, where the w eather had been against them, pl us a Swedish wooden c hurch in Hedared. The econo my was dis tressed so soo n afte r the war, especially when it came to foreig n cu rrency, but there were no r eal wooden churc hes left i n Denmark and buil ding an interior s et in the s tudi o would be too expensive. The finished film was shown for the first time on 24 Septembe r 1947 to a small, closed circle, which included the Minist er for E cclesi astical Affairs.
