Steinmetz’s abilities are ev olving by l eaps and bo unds, a nd i s progressing from being able to cr eate objects only to being able to crea te living things. His ultimate amb ition is to be able to crea te a human being. H e tells Dr. Holst that if he will only perform a certain bra in operation on him, Steinmetz wi ll become able to att ain his goal . He’s got a ll the ne cessary equipme nt set up i n his basement. Dr. Holst, ho wever , is too spooked by the whole thing to agr ee to this mad sche me, and refuses. S teinmetz then sets about man ipulat ing Hol st’s life, to pressure h im into performing the operat ion. B y then S teinmetz has become a ble to create a tempo rary human being, and i n the hope that he can perhaps make his own creation perfor m the opera tion, he ma nifests a doppelganger of Dr. Ho lst. This double proceeds to take over Dr. Holst’s life, creating chaos for him professional ly and pe rsonally. And then D r. Holst starts fighti ng back .
